Mavericks Fly East to Face the Buckeyes

Mankato, Minn.---Minnesota State (7-17-0, 3-15-0 WCHA) travels to Ohio State (11-9-4, 8-9-1-1 WCHA) this weekend in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association two-game series in Columbus, Ohio. Friday is scheduled for a 6:07 p.m. (CST) puck drop as Saturday is slated for a 3:07 p.m. (CST) start.

Ohio State University Notes:

- Last weekend against Bemidji State, the Buckeyes opened with a 5-3 win Friday, but fell to the Beavers on Saturday, 4-2.

- Senior Natalie Spooner continued her scoring ways, finishing with three goals and

two assists for five points to lead Ohio State. She scored the shorthanded game-winner on Friday. Spooner leads the team in points with 32 (21 goals,11 assists) and sits 12th in the WCHA.

- Spooner set the Ohio State career goals record last weekend. She also has 145 career points and is one away from tying Jeni Creary’s total of 146 for third in the program’s history … 

- Sophomore goalie Lisa Steffes earned the start in last Friday’s 5-3 win, totaling 29 saves. She came into Saturday’s game in the second period and Saturday’s game against BSU, moving to a 8-6-1 record. Steffes has played 60 percent of the games this season.

- The Buckeyes are yet to lose a game when leading after the end of the second period.

- OSU is +98 shots this season as they average 32 shots per game. 

- Spooner and sophomore Ally Tarr combine for ten of the 13 power-play goals OSU has scored.

- Ohio State stands 5-3-4 at home and 5-2-4 after it scores the first goal. 

Zrust

SCSU and MSU History:

- Minnesota State was swept in Mankato by Ohio State in late October. 

- MSU junior Lauren Zrust (right) scored the lone goal for Minnesota State in the series earlier this season. Fellow junior Lauren Smith and senior Emmi Leinonen assisted the goal.

- The Mavericks own a 9-41-4 record against the Buckeyes.

- Last season each team swept the road series against eachother.

- In the last 10 games, MSU is 2-8 against OSU.

- Minnesota State didn’t get its first win over Ohio State until the 19th time the teams met.

- Five of the last seven games were decided by one goal. 

- OSU’s Langen, Wild and McIntosh all collected two points during the weekend against the Mavericks in October of 2011. 

- Last season Kathleen Rogan had a goal and four assists in the games against the Buckeyes.

- MSU’s Lauren Smith collected two goals and two assists in 2010-11 against OSU.

- Ohio State’s Hokey Langan scored four goals in the four games last season.

- OSU’s Laura McIntosh tallied a goal and five assists against MSU a season ago.  


In the WCHA:  Lauren Barnes stands alone at the 16 point mark for the Mavericks, which puts her 33rd in the WCHA in points.  Lauren Smith  has 15 points, which sets her tied at 34th in the WCHA in points.   Kari Lundberg ranks 36th in points in the league. 

  Sophomore Lauren Barnes is tied for 24th in the WCHA for assists (12) through the first 24 games of the season. Senior Jackie Otto is currently tied in 9th in scoring for defenseman (3-10--13).

She’s Heating Up: In the past 11 games, Lauren Barnes (left) has racked up eight points and she notched two points last weekend. Lauren Zrust scored the game-winner against BSU last Friday, while also tallying an assist in the game as well. Jackie Otto compiled assists on both Maverick goals last weekend, moving her to be tied in 9th for scoring among defenseman in the WCHA. 


When Falling Behind: MSU had its first comeback victory last Friday as it stands 1-11 when trailing after the first period and 1-15 when trailing after the second period.


Power Play Tallies: The MSU  power-play ranks 13th in the nation this season as the Mavericks  have gone 14-for-78 (17.9 percent) with 107 shots while on the advantage.  Senior Jackie Otto leads the Mavericks in power-play goals with three as she runs the point on the advantage. Kari LundbergKathleen Rogan and Emilia Andersson each have scored two power-play goals as Lauren Zrust and Emmi Leinonen have one. A year ago,  the Mavericks scored power-play goals in eight different games. Of those games they scored a power-play goal in, they won five games. This season Minnesota State has scored power-play goals in ten games, winning just four of those games.
