MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State puts its eight-game win streak on the line this weekend as the Mavericks take to the road to face Bemidji State Friday at 6 p.m., before playing Minnesota Duluth Saturday at 4 p.m.
Pair of Three-Point Wins: MSU (12-3, 8-3 NSIC) continued its winning ways last weekend going 2-0 extending its win streak to eight games. The Mavericks defeated Northern State, 62-59 Friday night before taking down U-Mary, 52-49 as four players averaged more than nine points per game over the two-game span. Senior forward
Laura Weber led the way with 12.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game including a 14-point, nine-rebound performance Friday night against the Wolves. Fellow senior
Jennie Noreen averaged 11.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest while she recorded a double-double against U-Mary with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard
Jameila Hudnell rounded out the trio of Mavericks who averaged double-digits scoring 10.5 points per contest. Freshman guard
Aubrey Davis tied a season-high recording eight assists (all in the second half) against Northern State while going 4-of-4 from the free-throw line helping the Mavericks ice the victory over the Wolves. Davis followed up her seven-point performance with an 11-point, six-rebound outing as she sank two late free throws helping the Mavericks to their eighth-consecutive win. Over the weekend Davis averaged 9.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. She also combined to go 11-of-12 (91.7 FT%) from the charity stripe with the majority of her attempts coming in clutch times towards the end of the games.
Upcoming Opponents: Friday, Minnesota State looks to extend its eight-game win streak against Bemidji State. Sitting 5-11 overall and 3-8 in the NSIC, the Beavers have lost eight-consecutive games and are coming off a 93-69 loss against Concordia. The Mavericks own a 24-12 record in the all-time series between the schools including wins in five of the last six meetings. Last year, MSU took both games against the Beavers by the scores of 77-73 and 75-73. Saturday, the Mavericks face Minnesota Duluth which is 9-6 overall and 6-5 in NSIC action. The Bulldogs have lost three of their last four games and will host Southwest Minnesota State before the tilt against the Mavericks. UMD holds a 26-24 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools, however, the Mavericks have won seven of the last eight meetings. The Bulldogs got the best of MSU in the school’s last meeting as UMD won, 71-61.
Scouting the Beavers: The Beavers, coached by Mike Curfman, are led by three players averaging double-digits including Kate Warmack (12.4 ppg), Morgan Lee (12.1 ppg) and Shannon Thompson (10.5 ppg). Warmack’s 12.4 points per game is 13th-best in the NSIC as she is connecting on 49.3 percent of her field goal attempts. Warmack also leads the Beavers with 6.5 rebounds per contest while adding 1.3 blocks in 24.5 minutes per game. Morgan leads the Beavers in three-pointers made as she has made good on 33-of-87 (37.9 3FG%) from long range while adding 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Thompson leads the team with 3.1 assists per game which is sixth-best in the NSIC. She is second on the team with 25 three-pointers made (35.2 3FG%) while pulling down 2.8 rebounds per contest. Bemidji State is averaging 67.2 points per game while shooting 38.9 percent from the floor while allowing opponents 72.9 points on 40.4 percent shooting.
Scouting the Bulldogs: The Bulldogs, coached by Annette Wiles, are led by Katrina Newman who is fifth in the NSIC with 15.5 points and third with 8.5 rebounds per contest. Newman is shooting 48.1 percent from the floor while also contributing 1.4 steals per game in a team-high 30.8 minutes per game. The second-leading scorer for the Bulldogs is Courtney Doucette who averages 12.8 points per contest which is 12th-most in the NSIC. The team leader with 33 made three pointers (32.4 3FG%), Doucette also averages 3.2 rebounds and a team-best 3.0 assists per game. Rounding out the trio of Bulldogs averaging double figures is Shelly Stemper who averages 11.7 points per game. Stemper is second on the team with 5.0 rebounds per game while she also adds a team-best 1.9 steals per contest. Minnesota Duluth averages 67.6 points per game on 39.7 percent shooting while allowing opponents 61.0 points on 39.0 percent from the floor.
