Mankato, Minn. --- The Northern State Wolves used a 15-0 run midway through the first half and never looked back as it earned a 62-49 victory over Minnesota State Friday evening in front of a season-high 1,234 fans in the Taylor Center on the campus of Minnesota State University.
“I thought we played with better energy tonight,” said head coach
Matt Margenthaler. “We got some good looks in the first half, we just couldn’t the ball to fall through the net.”
The Mavericks opened a 13-7 lead with ten minutes and 51 seconds remaining in the first half when sophomore guard Alex Hanks hit a jumper at the top of the key. From that point on, Northern State used a 15-0 run to open a 22-13 lead, holding MSU without a field goal for 6:21.
Both teams exchanged baskets for the final four minutes of the first half as Northern State took a 31-18 lead into the break. Minnesota State shot just 25 percent in the first half while the Wolves hit on 54.5 percent of its opportunities, including 4-of-9 from down time.
Senior guard Stephen Kirschbaum led all Mavericks in scoring in the first half with seven points. The Mavericks forced eight Northern State turnovers in the first half, converting the miscues into six points.
The Mavericks were able to cut the NSU lead to single-digits at 35-26 with 15:13 remaining in the game when sophomore #Connor O’Brien# hit a jumper.
Northern State then answered with an 11-0 run over 5:19 to open a 20-point advantage at 49-29 and never look back.
Minnesota State was led in scoring by O’Brien who finished with 14 points while Kirschbaum added 11. MSU shot 33.3 for the game while Northern State hit on 44.6 of its opportunities. The Wolves outrebounded NSU, 38-37 while MSU outrebounded Northern State, 15-12 on the offensive end.
O’Brien added 13 rebounds – including eight offensively recording his fourth double-double of the season and the seventh of his career. He also turned away four shots.
Minnesota State (4-10, 3-7 NSIC) closes brief stay at home tomorrow evening when it hosts U-Mary at 6 p.m.
