Box Score St. Paul, Minn. --- The Minnesota State football team scored points on its first six possessions as it raced to a 41-6 halftime advantage and never looked back en route to a 57-34 victory over Concordia University at Sea Foam Stadium.
The 57 points marks the fourth time under head coach Todd Hoffner that MSU has scored 50 or more points in a game and the first time it has done so since a 53-7 win over Southwest Minnesota State.
Junior wideout
Dennis Carter took an end around and ran ten yards to put MSU on the board before junior kicker
Daniel Padilla hit field goals of 27 and 30 yards. MSU then used touchdown runs of four-yards by redshirt freshman
Andy Pfeiffer, 46-yards by sophomore
Jon Wolf and two yards by senior
LaMark Brown.
On MSU’s seventh possession, Concordia forced Minnesota State to punt only to have sophomore defensive end
Chris Schaudt force a fumble on the return which was recovered by redshirt freshman
Nathan Hancock recovered on the nine-yard line which eventually set up a three-yard touchdown run by Wolf.
Concordia cracked the scoreboard with 23 seconds remaining in the first half to end the threat of the shutout.
The Mavericks racked up 252 yards on 40 plays in the first half while CU had 162 yards on 35 plays. Minnesota State, which converted 4-of-8 third downs recorded 12 first downs in the first half while the Golden Bears were flagged for 12 penalties in the first 30 minutes, for a loss of 94 yards.
Both teams traded touchdowns to start the second half as Charles Gilbert hauled in a 27-yard touchdown pass for Concordia. Minnesota State responded with a four-yard touchdown run by Brown capping a 14-play 80-yard drive which covered seven minutes and 54 seconds.
Pfeiffer added his second touchdown of the day – a 35-yard run up the middle to give MSU a 54-20 lead with 12:55 remaining in the game.
Concordia sandwiched a pair of touchdowns around a Padilla 32-yard field goal to round out the scoring.
Minnesota State finished the game with 419 yards of total offense, 202 on the ground and 217 through the air, while CU had 463 yards, 318 in the air.
Pfeiffer finished with 19 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns to lead the ground attack while Daniels completed 14-of-18 passes for 209 yards. Six Mavericks caught passes led by Carter who hauled in seven catches for 92 yards.
The 116 yards for Pfeiffer marked his third straight 100-yard effort becoming the first freshman to do so since Jake Aberg in 2009.
Defensively sophomore
Jordan Hale led MSU with 11 tackles, five of which were solo.
Minnesota State (3-1, 3-0 NSIC, 1-0 NSIC South) hosts Winona State Oct. 1 in its annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
