Mavericks Down Beavers in Doubleheader

Mankato, Minn.— The Minnesota State softball team would give up only four hits in two victories over Bemidji State Sunday afternoon. The Mavericks (27-4, 4-0 NSIC) shutout the Beavers 8-0 and 5-0 at the Diamond at Gage Towers.  

For the third straight game, MSU would end the first inning with a 3-0 lead. Lauryn Morris would knock in Melanie Upchurch on her second triple of the season. Senior Natalie Spicer doubled to left center to score Morris. Chelsea Erickson would hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Spicer.

The Mavericks would add one run in the second inning off two Beaver errors in the field.

With its first four hits of the game, MSU would hit for the cycle in third inning. Freshman Lindsay Erickson tagged a single through the right side of the infield, before fellow freshman Kelly Wood would hit a moon shot over the left field fence, marking her fifth home run of the season. Wood and Erickson would lead MSU’s offense tallying two hits a piece. Minnesota State would add a run in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the 8-0 victory.

Sophomore pitcher Courtney McKelvogue displayed a spectacular one hit, eight strike out performance against the Beavers. The win gave McKelvogue her 13th win of the season and improves her earned run average to 1.08.

Minnesota State would add a run in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the 8-0 victory. Redshirt Freshman Eryn Edgerton would cross the dish in the fourth off Katie Kruse and Kendra Huettl singles. Lindsay Erickson would end the game in the fifth as she scored on a passed ball.

MSU freshman pitcher Kristen Fah would get the nod in game two of the doubleheader. Fah would earn her second win of the season with six strikeouts, giving up only three hits in the seven inning showing.

In the first inning, MSU started off hot as Upchurch and Morris would both earn base hits and steal second base. With two outs and two runners on, centerfielder Chelsea Erickson singled to left to bring in the two runs.

The Mavericks would score the rest of their runs in the bottom of the third inning to force a 5-0 difference on the Beavers.

Spicer would start the inning off with an opposite field laser double down the right field line. #Julie O’Neal# would trade spots with Spicer on a double to left center. Lindsay Erickson brought in O’Neal on a single to shallow centerfield. Erickson would take second on her first career stolen base as a Maverick. The freshman would be knocked in by second baseman Amanda Umhoefer.

MSU would end the day with eight hits with 16 different Mavericks getting at bats.

The Mavericks will continue Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Tuesday at 3 p.m., as Wayne State travel to Mankato for a doubleheader at the Diamond at Gage Towers.
