Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team continued its winning trend Monday as it earned a 5-1 victory over Northern Kentucky and a 1-0 victory over California (Pa), in day three of the 2011 Rebel Spring games.
The victories push MSU's record to 14-1 on the season and extend its winning streak to 12 games.
In the opener, Minnesota State raced to a 3-0 victory before holding on for the win. Sophomore leftfielder
Lauryn Morris drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch before taking third on a fly ball to the outfield.
Junior centerfielder
Chelsea Erickson doubled to left and moved to third on the throw home to plate Morris and senior first baseman
Natalie Spicer who had earlier walked.
Chelsea Erickson crossed the plate when her younger sister,
Lindsay Erickson reached on an error, staking the Mavericks to a 3-0 lead. MSU added a run in the fifth when Morris reached on an error and eventually scored on a ground out off the bat of senior third baseman Julie O'Neal.
The Maverick scoring concluded in the fifth when Lindsay Erickson doubled to left and was replaced by sophomore pinch runner
Eryn Edgerton. A sacrifice bunt off the bat of sophomore pinch hitter
Chloe Minkel moved Edgerton to third before she scored on a single off the bat of freshman pinch hitter
Kelly Wood.
MSU was led at the plate by
Lindsay Erickson who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Junior hurler
Kendra Huettl picked up her sixth victory of the season in the win as she went the distance scattering five hits while walking six. Huettl was efficient on the mound as she tossed 127 pitches and converted 82 (64.5 percent) for strikes.
In the nightcap, Minnesota State and the Vulcans of California (Pa.) squared off in a contest of two teams receiving votes in last week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.
The game was as good as advertised as it entered the seventh inning scoreless. Wood reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a single off the bat of sophomore shortstop
Abby Sonner to start the Maverick seventh. Junior pinch hitter
Katie Kruse then reached on a fielder's choice – one in which all the runner's were safe – bringing junior right fielder
Melanie Upchurch to the plate.
Upchurch promptly singled to first base, plating Wood and securing the Maverick victory.
Sophomore pitcher
Courtney McKelvogue earned her eighth win of the year – against no losses – as she went the distance scattering four hits and striking out four. McKelvogue worked her way out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth and a runners on first and second with one out in the seventh.
Upchurch and
Lindsay Erickson finished the game with two hits apiece for MSU.
Minnesota State is off tomorrow and returns to action Wednesday at 9 a.m. (EST) against Indiana (Pa.) before playing Southern Indiana at 1 p.m. (EST).
