Senior infielder Zach Rowles hit MSU's first homer of the season Monday

10 Runs in Second and Third Innings Propels St. Leo Past #10 Mavericks

St. Leo, Fla. — The Minnesota State baseball team, ranked tenth in the nation, fell to 2-4 overall Monday after dropping a nonconference battle with the St. Leo Lions, 10-2.

 

The Mavericks scored the first runs of the game in the top of the third after freshman outfielder Scott Linder reached on an error and senior infielder Zach Rowles lifted a two-run blast to left field.

 

It was all Lions after that, with St. Leo scoring four runs in the bottom of the third and three runs in fourth. Neither team was able to score another run, giving St. Leo the, 10-2, win.

 

Leading the Mavericks at the plate was Rowles who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and his first homerun of the season.

 

Freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Ockuly started and pitched the first 2 and 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, and seven hits, walked one and struck out one.  Freshman Ronnie Donley pitched 1/3 inning, giving up three runs, one earned, walking two and fanning one.

 

Sophomore reliever Josh Kubitschek pitched a game-high three innings and gave up three hits, one unearned run, and struck out one.

 

The Lions finished with 13 hits to the Mavericks five. MSU had a game-high five errors in the contest.

 

The Mavericks (2-4 overall) will look to pick up their third win of the season tomorrow against Saginaw Valley at 3:00 p.m. (EST).
