Mavericks Return Home for Final Homestand

What’s Up This Weekend: Minnesota State (11-10, 8-9 NSIC) looks to sweep the St. Cloud State Huskies on Friday at 6 p.m., at the Taylor Center. Saturday is the Mavericks final regular season home game, as MSU takes on Concordia at 4 p.m. Saturday is senior night for the Mavericks, as lone senior Andrea Walsh will be recognized for her commitment, dedication and accomplishments at Minnesota State.

Scoutin’ St. Cloud: The Huskies (10-11, 7-10 NSIC) come into Friday’s game with a 6-6 record on the road, with a 78-49 win last Saturday at Upper Iowa. SCSU is averaging 67 points per game and shooting 40 percent from the floor. Besides shooting 32 percent from three-point land, St. Cloud State averages 77 percent from the line this season. The Huskies average 33 rebounds, 12 steals, 12 assists, two blocks and 17 turnovers per game through there 21 games. SCSU have ten underclassmen on its roster and have lost five of its last seven games. Freshman Sam Price leads the team in offense as she averages 12.4 points, while shooting 37 percent from and field and 86 percent from the line. The lone senior Talisha Barlow is shooting 41 percent and averaging 11.8 points per game. Freshman Jessica Benson leads the team in boards with seven per game and is shooting 47 percent from the field.  Lori Fish is in her third season as coach of St. Cloud State.
 
MSU/SCSU History:  The two rival schools have faced each other 86 times, with Minnesota State winning 35 of them. In the past three meetings, MSU is 1-2 against the Huskies as all games were decided by three points or less. This season the Mavericks won 54-51 on an
Andrea Walsh buzzer-beater, while falling short last season 62-63 and 67-69 against the Huskies. In the last 10 meetings, MSU is 5-5 against SCSU. Minnesota State’s longest winning streak against St. Cloud State came from 1968-75 and 1991-95, both streaks winning nine games in a row. The Huskies on the other hand, owned MSU from 1999-2007 by winning 20 games in a row. Ali Wilkinson led the Maverick offense when they met earlier this season at SCSU, as the sophomore dropped 15 points and 11 boards.

Scoutin’ Concordia: The Golden Bears (13-8, 12-5 NSIC) one of the hottest teams in the NSIC as they are currently on a ten-game winning streak coming into the weekend.  During its streak, Concordia has beaten all ten teams by double-digits. The Golden Bears were 2-0 last weekend, beating Upper Iowa 66-47 and Winona State 76-64. Concordia lost its first seven road games of the season but have won four in a row on the road, gathering a 4-7 away record.
Senior guard Jineen Williams leads the team in scoring and rebounds, averaging 15.8 points and 6.3 boards per game. Senior Maurika Hickman is averging 15.6 points and is shooting 48 percent from downtown and 87 percent from the free-throw line. Senior Zoraa Quoie averages 9.4 points and tallied 75 assists.

MSU/Concordia: Concordia leads the series 11-9 in the 20 meetings. The two teams played three times last year, including once in the NSIC tournament as Concordia ended the Mavericks season 81-74. In the last ten meetings, Concordia has won six games. The longest winning streak in the series went eight games from 2000-2008 belonging to Concordia. Concordia beat MSU 79-64 in St. Paul earlier this season, as Minnesota State sophomore
Ali Wilkinson and junior Laura Weber each collected double-doubles in the game.  

Welcome Back: SCSU Head Coach Lori Fish spent four years at MSU before taking the St. Cloud State job three years ago. While at MSU, Fish held a 62-53 record. St. Cloud State assistant coach Megan Vogel was a former volunteer Minnesota State coach last season. SCSU Graduate assistant coach Alanna Wahl played for the Mavericks from 03-07 when Fish was the coach. Minnesota State head coach Pam Gohl was an assistant coach for fish for two years before taking the throne at Minnesota State.
