Duluth, Minn.— Minnesota State Mavericks suffered a 71-61 loss against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Friday evening. Despite Andrea Walsh’s 17 point performance, the Mavericks suffered their 13th loss of the season at the Romano Gymnasium.
Senior Guard Andrea Walsh hit a three on MSU’s first shot of the game, sparking the Mavericks on an 11-2 run in the first five minutes of the game.
Ten minutes into the first half the Bulldogs pulled within two, headed by a pair of three’s by Minnesota Duluth’s Lindsay Miller. Minutes later, the Bulldogs were atop the Mavericks 20-17. Miller finished with 15 points for Minnesota Duluth.
Despite UMD’s 8-0 run late in the half, Minnesota State managed to pull within two at halftime, 33-31.
Leading the Mavericks in offense in the first half was Walsh, who managed to tally 12 points. Minnesota State sophomore’s Ali Wilkinson and Sarah Wiens each had six points at the midway point, with Wiens going 2-of-2 from downtown in the half. Wilkinson would finish with 16 points and seven rebounds.
With six different lead changes in the half, the Bulldogs owned the boards 19-11 over the Mavericks. MSU shot 43 percent from the floor and 50 percent from beyond the arc. UMD was 42 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three-point land.
Opening the second half with a 6-3 run, Minnesota State regained a 37-36 lead over Minnesota Duluth with 15:14 remaining in the game. The lead wouldn’t last long, as the Bulldogs would stay ahead of MSU the last 13:58 of the game.
With 11:36 remaining, junior Jennie Noreen pulled the Mavericks within two, with UMD’s Shelley Stemper hitting a three to put the Bulldogs back up five points. The next three minutes and 11 seconds were scoreless for both teams.
The closest Minnesota State would get was within six points in the final eight minutes of the game.
MSU shot 36 percent from the floor and 30 percent from downtown in the game. UMD shot 40 percent from the floor and 36 percent from downtown. The Bulldogs won the battle of the boards 47-31, with 26 of their points coming in the paint.
Minnesota State (11-13, 8-12 NSIC) will face the Bemidji State Beavers Saturday at 4 p.m., in Bemidji, Minn.
