Mavericks Power Past #19 Colorado College

 Colorado Springs, Colo.  --- Minnesota State never trailed and used three unanswered third-period goals in downing 19th-rated Colorado College, 5-1, in Colorado Springs, Colo., Friday.
 
The Mavericks owned a 1-0 lead after the first period of action with the lone goal in the opening stanza coming at the 6:01 mark. Junior forward Justin Jokinen registered his ninth goal of the season after he took a nice pass from the corner from Ben Youds and beat CC netminder Joe Howe with a shotlow on the stickside.
 
A power play goal just 42 seconds into the middle frame by junior forward Michael Dorr was the lone goal of the period. The goal ups Dorr’s team-leading total to 12 for the season. It’s also his fourth power play marker for 2009-10.  
 
The Tigers pulled within one at 1:46 of the third period when William Rapuzzi’s screen shot from 40 feet out drifted over the shoulder of Maverick junior netminder Austin Lee. But MSU responded with three straight goals in putting the game away. 
 
Sophomore forward Eriah Hayes scored at 6:25, then junior forward Mike Louwerse deked a defenseman and then netminder Joe Howe to put the puck into the net at 9:01. Hayes for his second goal when he tipped the puck past Howe at 10:47 for the final goal of the game.
 
Senior defenseman Kurt Davis, who assisted on Dorr’s power play goal now has 20-72—92 in 143 career games and is MSU’s top-scoring defenseman for its NCAA Divison I era (1995-present). The former leader was Todd George, who had 20-72—91 in 145 games from 1996-2000. Davis ranks third all-time at MSU in defensemen scoring.
 
Senior forward Andrew Sackrison had two assists in the contest.
 
MSU netminder Austin Lee was credited with 21 saves in the game as the Mavericks owned a 29-22 advantage in shots on goal.
 
The Mavericks and the Tigers square-off again tomorrow at Colorado Springs World Arena with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled.
