Box Score MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks won their home opener Monday night in an 88-46 rout at the Taylor Center over visiting Waldorf College.
MSU got out to a great start in front of its home fans beginning the game on a 20-0 run over the games first six minutes.
The Mavericks were led in the first half, in which they shot 58.6 percent from the floor, by junior guard
Jameila Hudnell who scored 11 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting performance from the field. Sophomore guard
Alli Hoefer also scored in double-digits for MSU in the first half as she connected on 4-of-6 from the field, recording ten points.
MSU outscored Waldorf 48-27 in the first half as the Warriors connected on just 9-of-23 (39.1 FG%) from the field while committing 12 turnovers compared to just six by the Mavericks.
Much like the first half, the second half was dominated by MSU as it outscored Waldorf, 40-19. Freshman guard
Aubrey Davis posted 11 of her game-high 16 points in the second half, connecting on 3-of-4 from downtown while also contributing three assists.
The Mavericks played stellar defense all night forcing 18 of the Warriors’ 30 turnovers in the second half as four different Mavericks recorded two second-half steals. MSU also found more success offensively in the second half connecting on 41.9 percent of their shots compared to just 29.2 percent by Waldorf.
Hudnell finished the game with 12 points while junior forward
Ali Wilkinson contributed 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Three Mavericks recorded a team-high five rebounds including Hudnell and freshman forwards
Jamie Bresnahan and
Lexie Ulfers.
Waldorf saw two of its players reach double-digits as Mollie Franzen and Ellie Markwardt each finished with ten points.
MSU finished with more rebounds (37-31), assists (16-4), blocks (5-0) and steals (18-7) as it dropped Waldorf to 1-4 on the year.
Minnesota State (3-0) returns to action Saturday, Nov. 26 as it plays its final non-conference game of the season as the Mavericks are set to host UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m., at the Taylor Center.
