Duluth, Minn. --- Eighth-rated Minnesota Duluth used a four-goal second-period scoring flurry to pull away from visiting Minnesota State Saturday in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.
The Bulldogs, who are unbeaten in their last ten games, claimed a 7-3 win over the Mavericks in Duluth in sweeping the two-game league series.
The scoring was fast and furious early in the second period with the Bulldogs finding themselves owning a 4-0 lead with the four goals all coming in a span of one minute and 36 seconds.
Justin Crandall started things with his goal at the 1:40 mark and was followed
by J.T. Brown at 1:57,
Caleb Herbert at 2:52 and
Joe Basaraba at 3:16. The Mavericks were able to get one back when
Matt Leitner deflected
Evan Mosey’s shot from the point past
Kenny Reiter at 5:19.
Freshman forward
Max Gaede got his first career goal as a collegian at the 0:43 mark of the third period in cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Jack Connelly tallied a power play marker for UMD at 3:13 and then a goal by
Jake Hendrickson at 4:23 stretched the score to 6-2.
Brady Lamb added a power play goal for the Bulldogs at 8:11 and MSU junior forward
Eli Zuck got his second goal of the year at 15:23 to round out the scoring in the game.
Max Gaede, who got his first career points in the game, and
Matt Leitner both finished with a goal and an assist. MSU netminders
Phil Cook and
Austin Lee combined for 30 saves in the game while UMD’s
Kenny Reiter finished with 26 stops.
Now 3-9-0, 2-5-0 WCHA on the year, the Mavericks return home to host Alaska Anchorage in a pair of league games at Verizon Wireless Center next Friday and Saturday.
