MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks were unable to comeback after allowing three first-period goals to St. Cloud State Saturday night as they dropped a 3-2 decision in front of 4,061 fans at the Verizon Wireless Center.
 
The first period saw plenty of action as the Huskies found the net early when Cory Thorson connected on a pass from Jarrod Rabey and Mitch MacMillan taking a 1-0 lead at the 1:19 mark.
 
It wasn’t long until St. Cloud scored its second goal as Ben Hanowski flipped the puck over the glove of MSU senior goalie Austin Lee giving the Huskies a 2-0 advantage one minute and 48 seconds into the first period.  St. Cloud State’s Andrew Prochno assisted on the goal, his third of the year.
 
MSU responded with its first goal of the night at the 6:55 mark when junior forward Eriah Hayes scored a power play goal, his first of the year, cutting the Huskies lead to one.  Hayes’ goal was assisted by Eli Zuck and Michael Dorr.
 
The Huskies would regain their two goal lead later in the period as David Eddy scored on passes from Kevin Gravel and Hanowski at the 9:07 mark giving St. Cloud a 3-1 lead.
 
After a scoreless second period, the Mavericks were once again able to pull within one as senior forward Adam Mueller took a short-handed breakaway pass from Dorr and fired the puck past St. Cloud’s Ryan Faragher.  The goal six minutes and 30 seconds into the period was Mueller’s first of the season and made the score 3-2.
 
However, the Mavericks comeback would fall short as St. Cloud State was able to hold on and earn the 3-2 win.  The win gives St. Cloud State a 5-5-2 overall record and a 3-2-1 WCHA record.
 
The Mavericks (3-7-0, 2-4-0 WCHA) are next in action Friday, Nov. 18 when they hit the road for a two-game series against Minnesota Duluth.  Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:37 p.m., while Saturdays is at 7:07 p.m.
