Fayette, Iowa --- The Minnesota State football team racked up 388 of total yards en route to a 32-14 victory over Upper Iowa Saturday afternoon in front of 1,539 fans at Eischeid Stadium on the campus of Upper Iowa University.
With the win, MSU moves to 6-0 all-time against the Peacocks.
The Mavericks raced to a 22-0 halftime advantage and never looked back as it scored 19 of its 22 points in the second quarter. Junior kicker Daniel Padilla hit a season-long 43-yard field goal with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Junior wideout Dennis Carter opened the second quarter with a 19-yard touchdown rush before the Mavericks picked up a safety on an errant snap pushing the score to 12-0. Padilla answered with a 37-yard field goal on MSU’s ensuing possession before senior quarterback Jon Daniels found Carter for a four-yard score on what appeared to be an impossible throw to the corner of the endzone.
Daniels completed 11-of-12 passes in the first half for 124 yards and a score while Carter caught five passes for 73 yards. As a squad, MSU accumulated 245 yards of total offense and maintained possession for 17:58 of the 30 first half minutes.
Padilla hit his second 43-yard field goal of the game to open the third quarter as MSU took a 25-0 lead with 11:13 left in the third quarter.
Upper Iowa got on the scoreboard with 7:50 left in the third quarter as Smith plunged in from two yards out, cutting the MSU lead to 25-7.
Daniels responded on the ensuing possession as he completed 6-of-7 passes for 35 yards and rushed once for 18 yards and capped the drive with a two-yard toss to junior tightend Matt Murphy who hauled in his first career touchdown as a Maverick.
Upper Iowa added a touchdown late to round out the scoring.
Daniels finished the game 19-of-25 for 192 yards and two touchdowns while Carter caught six passes for a team-high 85 yards. Redshirt freshman Andy Pfeiffer led MSU on the ground with 18 carries for 78 yards.
Defensively junior linebacker Marcus Hall-Oliver led MSU with eight tackles.
Minnesota State (5-2, 5-1 NSIC, 3-0 NSIC South Division) opens its final two-game homestand next Saturday when it hosts Wayne State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
