Mavericks Beat Golden Eagles in a Two-Point Thriller

Mankato, Minn.— Minnesota State sophomore forward Ali Wilkinson recorded her second consecutive double-double to pace the Mavericks to victory 69-67 over Minnesota, Crookston. The win gives MSU its second straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory, boosting its record to 4-4 in the NSIC.

MSU freshman Alli Hoefer broke a 2-2 tie by nailing a three and making a steal and the ensuing possession to put in an easy lay-up to lift the Mavericks up 7-2 17:15 into the half. Hoefer managed to put down ten points in the first half, finishing with season-high 12 points.

Sophomore wing Stephanie Haight came off the bench to give the Minnesota State an offensive spark by scoring five points in the first 2:24 minutes she entered the game giving the MSU a 14-7 lead with 13:49 remaining in the half.

UMC’s Jamie Zelinsky scoring four points as the Golden Eagles clawed back going on a 6-0 run to minimize the MSU lead to 21-20 with 6:31 remaining. Zelinsky had 13 points at the half.

Wilkinson picked up where she left off last night owning the boards as she took down six rebounds and scored six points in the first half. The Blue Mounds, Wisc., native finished the evening with 11 points and 11 rebounds, marking her third back-to-back double-double this season, giving her sixth of the year.

Minnesota State shot 50 percent (17-of-34) in the first half, and 4-of-10 from beyond the arc maintaining a 38-32 lead.

Minnesota, Crookston came out with second half offensive surge on its mind managing to pull a 17-6 run to take a 49-45 lead over MSU in the first six minutes of the second half.

Junior center Laura Weber had five of the first seven points in the second half for MSU, finishing the day with 14 points.

The Mavericks scored a quick five points to shrink the score to 55-54 with 9:02 remaining in the game. Andrea Walsh connected from downtown at 7:32 to put MSU back on top 57-55, Walsh ended the day with eight assists and nine points.

The Mavericks finished shooting 43 percent from the field, compared to the Golden Eagles who shot 44 percent. MSU scored 20 of its 31 points in the second half off turnovers.

Minnesota State (7-5, 4-4 NSIC) looks to continue its winning streak against Southwest Minnesota State in the Taylor Center Saturday Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.
