Mavericks Await Bulldogs and Beavers at Bresnan Arena

What’s Up This Weekend: Minnesota State (8-7, 5-6 NSIC) comes into the weekend hungry for a win after being swept last weekend by Northern State 57-70 and U-Mary 57-63. On Friday the Mavericks will host Bemidji State at the Taylor Center starting at 6 p.m. MSU will return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Minnesota Duluth makes its way to the Taylor Center.

Scouting Bemidji State:
The Beavers (5-10, 2-9 NSIC) come into Friday’s game with a 1-5 road record and are currently on a three game skid. Bemidji State was swept last weekend by St. Cloud 51-70 and Concordia 70-85. BSU shares the scoring role as six players average between seven and 9.4 points per game. Colleen McKay averages 9.4 points per game for the Beavers with 5.8 rebounds per game and is shooting 45 percent from the floor this season. Ellie Wessling is shooting 46 percent from the floor and averaging 9.1 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. Bemidji State has lost seven of its last eight games and is yet to find a road win in the NSIC this season. BSU comes into Friday shooting 38 percent from the field, 28 percent from beyond the arc and 75 percent from the free throw line. Mike Curfman is in his sixth year as head coach of the Beavers and holds a 60-93 record in his time there.

Inside The Series: In a series that dates back to 1976, Minnesota State holds a 21-13 record against BSU. The Beavers beat the Mavericks twice last season, 80-72 and 61-59. MSU owns the greatest margin of victory of 106-54, which happened in 2008 when Minnesota State won the National Championship. The longest winning streak goes to 1979-86 when the Mavericks dominated the Beavers in 12 straight games.

Scouting Minnesota Duluth: The Bulldogs (9-6, 7-4 NSIC) come into the weekend in fourth place in the NSIC. Last weekend UMD went 1-1 losing to Concordia 50-79 and beating St. Cloud State 72-47. Minnesota Duluth owns a 2-3 record on the road this season and is averaging 69.6 points per game and shooting 42 percent from the floor in its 15 games. Junior Lindsay Miller leads the pack as she averages 15.7 points per game and shoots 43 percent from the floor and 44 percent from downtown. Senior forward Kelsey Hewitt is shooting 50 percent from the floor this season and leads the Bulldogs in rebounding with 7.4  boards per game and 14.5 points per game. Freshman Katrina Newman is averaging 11.1 points per game. Annette Wiles is in her third season as head coach at UMD.
 
Inside The Series: In a rivalry that started 39 years ago, the Mavericks are 23-25 in the 48 games against the Bulldogs. Minnesota State currently owns a six game winning streak over UMD.  The streak happens to be the longest in the series and dates back to 2007. Minnesota Duluth’s Linday Miller scored 26 points when the two teams met a year ago. The largest victory between the two teams was in 2007 when MSU punished UMD 91-57, then beat the Bulldogs 90-57 the following year.
 
All-Time: The 2010-11 season marks the 46th year of women’s basketball as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. MSU currently holds a 586-528(.526) and has made three NCAA Tournament Appearances in 1986, 2008 and 2009. In 2009, the Minnesota State won its first women’s basketball national championship.

In the past three games
Ali Wilkinson is averaging 19 points per game and 11.3 rebounds per game and Junior Jennie Noreen is averaging 15 points per game.

Queen of the Boards:
Ali Wilkinson leads the NSIC in rebounding this season averaging 9.2 per game. The Sophomore earned her eighth double-double of the season against University of Mary last Saturday with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Wilkinson has scored double digit points in every game but three this season.

Where We Call Home:  The Minnesota State women’s basketball team has called the friendly confines of Bresnan Arena at Taylor Center home for 11 seasons now. MSU is off to a 6-2 this season at the Taylor Center. All-time, the Mavericks are 89-59 (.601) at Taylor Center, including a 16-2 mark in the 2008-09 season. The 16 wins were the most wins at Taylor Center in one season. In the 2009-10 season the Mavericks finished the season with an 11-3 record at the Taylor Center.
