Mavericks Split with Warriors in Regular Season Finale

Winona, Minn.The Minnesota State softball team split in doubleheader action against the Warriors Sunday afternoon, dropping the first game, 9-1 then defeating them 4-2.

 

In game one, the Mavericks opened up the first inning with their lone run of the game. Senior second basemen Abby Morris led off with a single to center field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior catcher Kelsey Thompson hit a single, advancing Morris to third. Sophomore leftfielder Chelsea Erickson singled to left field, bringing Morris in for the run.

 

The Warriors tallied five runs in the bottom of the third inning off four hits and one Maverick error. Winona State hit two home runs in the inning bring all five runners in. The Warriors tallied one more run in the bottom of the fifth off a home run before bringing in three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to close-out the game.

 

The Mavericks tallied one run off six hits with four errors, while the Warriors tallied nine runs off nine hits and no errors.

 

Sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl pitched five innings with six runs off six hits, while striking out four. Huettl’s record falls to 15-8 on the season.

 

In game two, the Warriors brought the first two runs in during the bottom of the second inning off three hits.

 

The Mavericks came out swinging in the top of the fourth inning, bringing in two runs. Senior shortstop Libbie Reichling drilled a home run, her seventh of the season. Thompson followed up with another home run, her 11 of the season.

 

Minnesota State tallied one run in the top of the sixth inning as Morris hit a home run for her fourth of the season. In the top of the seventh the Mavericks finished the game with one more run as freshman Abby Sonner singled to left field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, before Morris doubled to center field bringing Sonner in for the final run.

 

Morris paced the Mavericks at the plate going 2-for-4 from the plate bringing two runners in. The Mavericks tallied four runs off nine hits and no errors.

 

Redshirt freshman pitcher Courtney McKelvogue earned the win, improving her record to 18-3 on the season. McKelvogue had two runs off six hits while striking out 10.

 

Minnesota State (33-11, 19-7 NSIC) finished fifth in the conference and will participate in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament Friday as they battle Concordia-St. Paul in Sioux Falls, S.D., first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
