Fayette, Iowa—The Minnesota State softball team swept the Peacocks of Upper Iowa Saturday afternoon in a pair of NSIC games, 6-2 and 4-2.
In the opening game, the Mavericks swung hard in the top of the first with five run off four hits. Senior second basemen Abby Morris led off with a double down the left field line before senior shortstop Libbie Reichling drilled a home run to left field, her sixth of the season, bringing two runs in. Sophomore leftfielder Chelsea Erickson doubled to left center, followed by a home run to left field by junior third basemen Julie O'Neal, her second of the season, bringing three more runs in.
Minnesota State brought one run in at the top of the third inning as Erickson homered to left center for her third of the season.
In the bottom of the fourth the Peacocks brought their only two runs in off a home run to right field.
The Mavericks finished the game with six runs off 14 hits and no errors. O’Neal went 2-for-2 at the plate bringing three runs in, while Reichling went one-for-two bringing two runs in.
Sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl went the distance scattering four hits, with two runs while striking out seven. Huettl improves her record to 15-7 on the season.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Mavericks battled the Peacocks for four innings before bringing in three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Junior first basemen Natalie Spicer hit a home run to left center bringing three runs in. The home run is Spicer’s fourth of the season.
The Peacocks struck back in the bottom of the fifth inning bringing two runners in off one hit. One runner came in on a home run to left field followed by one more run coming in on a Maverick error.
At the top of the seventh inning the Mavericks brought an insurance run in after Morris reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Reichling followed by a single to left field by Spicer bringing Morris in.
Spicer paced the Mavericks at the plate going two-for-three bringing all four Maverick runs in. Minnesota State brought four runs in of five hits with one error, while the Peacocks had two runs off eight hits and two errors.
Redshirt freshman Courtney McKelvogue pitched four innings scattering five hits, with two runs while striking out two. McKelvogue earns the win improving her record to 17-3.
Huettl finished the game earning her second save of the season scattering three hits and striking out two batters.
Minnesota State (32-10, 18-6 NSIC) will travel to Winona, Minn. to battle Winona State in a doubleheader, first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
