Twenty-First Rated Mavericks Pick Up a Pair of Wins Against Wayne State

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Maverick baseball team finished up their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series with Wayne State Monday afternoon, taking both games by scores of 6-3 and 3-0.

The Wildcats struck first in the opening inning of game one, scoring on a bases loaded walk by sophomore pitcher Blake Schwartz.

The Mavericks answered in the second inning with a RBI single from sophomore designated hitter Pat Dockendorf, scoring junior outfielder Danny Miller.

The top of the third saw senior Joe Wendte score on a passed ball to recapture the lead, 2-1, for WSC.

Sophomore Mike Bisenius opened up the fourth inning with a solo shot to right field extending the Wildcat lead to, 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore right fielder Ben Kincaid advanced home on a groundout by Dockendorf. Later in the inning, Miller scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by sophomore second baseman Matt Kuchenbecker, evening up the score at three.

The Mavericks stole the lead in the fifth inning after junior shortstop Zach Rowles reached first on a throwing error, stole second and was driven in on a single by Miller.

After a leadoff double by Dockendorf and a sacrifice bunt by Kuchenbecker, sophomore first baseman Matt Odegaard snuck a double down the right field line sending Dockendorf home. Junior catcher Steven Helget followed up with a RBI single, making the Maverick lead, 6-3 after six innings.

Dockendorf and Eckhart at the plate each tallied three hits in game one, Dockendorf earning two RBI, while Eckhart batted in one.

With the complete game victory, Schwartz improves his record to 9-1. The righty gave up four hits, allowed three runs (two earned), walked five and struck out eight. The complete game marks Schwartz’s third of the season.

Senior third basement Kosuke Hattori went hitless in the outing, snapping his team season high 18-game hit streak.

In game two of the double header, Hattori opened up action by becoming MSU’s all-time base-on-balls leader. The Kanagawa, Japan native earned his 100th career walk.

Odegaard slapped in a base hit to right field in the bottom of the second to plate the first run of the second game. Freshman outfielder Mike Eckhart then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Kuchenbecker making the Maverick lead, 2-0 after two.

In the bottom of the fifth, Eckhart recorded his first career triple on a line drive to right center field and later scored on a wild pitch increasing the MSU lead to, 3-0.

Senior right handed pitcher Pat Lenton threw a gem on his way to his seventh victory. The righty hurled a complete game shutout, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out three. The complete game gives Lenton his team leading fifth of the season and currently leads the Mavericks with 2.79 ERA.

 

The Minnesota State baseball squad (31-11, 20-6 NSIC) will travel to St. Paul, Minn. for a NSIC doubleheader with the Concordia University Golden Bears Wednesday with the opening pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
