Mavericks Sweep Beavers With Back-to-Back Shut-Outs

Bemidji, Minn. The Minnesota State softball team swept Bemidji State Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader in which the Mavericks held the Beavers scoreless in both games, 7-0 and 9-0.

 

The Mavericks opened up game one in the top of the second inning with a double to left center by freshman Katie Kruse followed by a single to third base, bringing the first runner in. Minnesota State tallied another run in the top of the fourth off a throwing error by the Beavers.

 

In the top of the fifth the Mavericks pulled away with four runs off four hits with one Beaver error. Sophomore Chelsea Erickson hit a double to right field, junior Julie O'Neal singled to center field and freshman Nicki Menke singled through the left side. Minnesota State finished the game with one more run in the top of the seventh off two hits.

 

The Mavericks tallied seven runs off 13 hits and no errors, while the Beavers posted zero runs off six hits and two errors.

 

Sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl pitched four innings improving her record to 11-6, allowing only four runs while striking out seven. Freshman Jenna Peterson finished the last two innings allowing two hits.

 

In game two, Minnesota State brought the first run in at the top of the second inning off three hits. The Mavericks took control in the top of the fifth inning as Peterson hit a double down left field line bringing one runner in. Senior Kelsey Thompson drilled her fifth home run of the season to left field bringing two runners in. Erickson hit a double to left field before freshman Liz Doppenberg hit her second home run of the season to left field bringing two in.

 

The Mavericks closed-out game two in the top of the sixth inning with three more runs off four hits. Sophomore Amanda Umhoefer hit a triple to right field.

 

Minnesota State tallied nine runs off 14 hits and no errors, while the Beavers had zero runs with only three hits.

 

Freshman pitcher Courtney McKelvogue earned the shut-out allowing only three hits while striking out seven, she improves her record to 12-3.

 

The Mavericks (23-9, 9-5 NSIC) travel to Wayne, Neb. to take on Wayne State Wednesday, first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
