Mankato, Minn.-- The Minnesota State softball team dropped two games to the Golden Bears of Concordia University Thursday afternoon, the first game 6-4 in ten innings, and 3-1 in game two.
The Golden Bears opened up game one with a run in the top of the first off a single to right center bringing a runner in.
Minnesota State answered back in the bottom of the first with two on base as senior
Kelsey Thompson drilled a home run to centerfield, her third of the season, bringing three runs in for the Mavericks.
In the bottom of the second MSU tallied a run as senior
Libbie Reichling singled to right field followed by a single to third base by senior
Abby Morris, Reichling advanced home on a throwing error by the Golden Bears.
The Golden Bears tripled to right field in the top of the third bringing one runner in. Concordia tallied two more runs in the top of the fifth inning off three hits to tie the game 4-4.
Minnesota State unable to close out the game in seven innings. Concordia tallied two runs in the top of the 10th inning off three hits, two doubles and a single to end the game.
Freshman pitcher
Courtney McKelvogue pitched the first five innings allowing four runs off seven hits while striking out four.
Sophomore pitcher
Kendra Huettl pitched the final five innings allowing two runs off four hits while striking out five, Huettl takes the loss.
In the bottom of the first, in game two for the Mavericks, sophomore
Chelsea Erickson singled to second base which brought one runner in giving the Mavericks an early lead, 1-0.
Concordia opened up the top of the third with two singles up the middle and a single to third base bringing one runner in. The Golden Bears earned another run in the top of the fourth off two hits and would finish the game in the top of the seventh with one more run off a double to right field.
Huettl falls to 9-6 as she pitched the first three innings allowing two runs off five hits while striking out one.
McKelvogue threw the last four innings allowing only one run off four hits while striking out two.
The Mavericks (19-9, 5-5 NSIC) travel to Duluth to take on the Bulldogs in a doubleheader Saturday, first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
