Mavericks Pick Up A Pair of Wins

            Mankato, Minn. The Minnesota State softball team earned a pair of wins over Northern State Sunday afternoon, 4-1 and 9-0.

 

The Mavericks opened up with the lead in the bottom of the first earning two runs off three hits, with one error. Senior Abby Morris singled to left field, followed by bunt single by freshman Lauryn Morris. Abby Morris came in on an error while Lauryn Morris was brought in off a sacrifice fly to right field by sophomore Chelsea Erickson

 

In the bottom of the third junior Natalie Spicer singled up the middle followed by a double from Erickson bringing Spicer in for the run.

 

Minnesota State tallied one more run in the bottom of the fourth off one hit, by freshman Liz Doppenberg as she hit a single to center field.

 

Northern State earned their lone run in the top of the fifth as Ashley Gabler homered to left field.

 

The Mavericks tallied four runs off eight hits committing zero errors while the Wolves earned one run off three hits, committing one error.

 

Freshman pitcher Courtney McKelvogue earned the win with one run off three hits while striking out eight. She improves her record to 10-3

 

In game two, the Mavericks grabbed an early lead with three runs off three hits in the bottom of the first. Lauryn Morris hit a triple to right center bringing one runner in, followed by a single from Erickson.

 

In the bottom of the third Minnesota State added three more runs off three hits and two errors. Freshman Chloe Minkel hit a triple to right field. The Mavericks would tally three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Katie Kruse tallied her first home run of the season to close-out the 9-0, five-inning victory.

 

Minnesota State earned nine runs off nine hits committing one error, while the Wolves earned zero runs of four hits, committing two errors.

 

Sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl earned the win with zero runs off four hits, while striking out six. She improves her record to 9-4.

 

The Mavericks (19-7, 5-3 NSIC) continue hosting duties Wednesday against Concordia St. Paul, first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
