Mavericks Sweep Marauders on Sunday

BISMARCK, N.D. --- The Maverick baseball team wrapped up their series with the University of Mary Marauders in Bismarck, N.D. Sunday and defeated UM by scores of 10-5 and 3-0.

Mary jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one when sophomore Marice Burrough scored on an error by senior third baseman Kosuke Hattori.

 

The Mavericks answered in the top of the third when Hattori doubled to score junior short stop Zach Rowles and freshman outfielder Mike Eckhart. Junior outfielder Danny Miller then drove in Hattori with a RBI single, followed by sophomore second baseman Matt Kuchenbecker tallied a RBI single to send Miller home.

 

Eckhart put MSU up 5-1 with a RBI double in the fourth, scoring sophomore first baseman Matt Odegaard.

 

The Marauders knotted things up with two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. The fourth saw RBI doubles from junior Adrian Garcia and sophomore Steven Pletan. Senior Tyler Liffrig hit a two-run bomb.

 

With the game tied, the Mavericks tallied five runs in the seventh and eighth to down the Marauders, 10-5. Miller scored on a wild pitch, followed by a two-run double from Odegaard. The two runs in the eighth were courtesy of RBI singles from Kuchenbecker and Kincaid.

 

Senior righty Patrick Lenton pitched five innings giving up five runs (three earned) off of five hits, walking one and striking out four. Freshman right hand pitcher Mahlon Zimmermann picked up his first win of the season in three innings of action, giving up no runs, two hits and striking out five.

 

Game two saw the Mavericks defeat the Marauders, 3-0. Kincaid hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the first, Hattori hit a RBI single in the third and junior catcher Steven Helget hit a RBI double in the four.

 

Sophomore righty Blake Schwartz improved his record to 7-0 and pitched his second complete game of the season. In the win, Schwartz gave up no runs, scattered six hits and struck out six.

 

The Mavericks (26-8, 15-3 NSIC) will host the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon at MSU Baseball Complex. Game one of the doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m.
