Mavericks Drop a Pair at Rebel Spring Games

3/8/2010 2:35:52 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Fla.. --- The Minnesota State softball team suffered a pair of 2-0 losses to Ferris State and the University of Indianapolis today at the Rebel Spring Games.

In the opener, Ferris State plated a run in the third and another in the fourth to stake a 2-0 lead and never look back.  Pither Dana Bowler went the distance to earn the win for the Bulldogs as she struck out five and walked one while scattering three hits.

Minnesota State would threaten in the fifth as senior second baseman Abby Morris singled and moved to second on a passed ball.  She was stranded after a pop-up and a ground ball, squashing the Mavericks only real threat of the game.

Redshirt freshman Courtney McKelvogue took the loss for Minnesota State, falling to 3-2 on the season.  She finished the game allowing two runs – both earned – on five hits while striking out four.

In the nightcap, Indianapolis staked an early 1-0 lead as second baseman Jamie Keltz opened the game with a single and then stole second.  Keltz would come around to score two batters later on a RBI single off the bat of Ashley Boxley.

The Mavericks put runners on second and third with no outs to open the bottom of the second, however neither runner came across to score, as UI pitcher Jennifer DeMotte used a flyout, pop-up and groundout to end the Maverick threat.

Indianapolis added another run in the fifth to seal the win.

Sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl went the distance to take the loss as she allowed a pair of runs – both earned – while giving up seven hits and striking out eight.

Minnesota State (7-3) is idle Tuesday and returns to action Wednesday against C.W. Post and California (Pa.).  Game times are 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
