Looking Ahead: The Minnesota State Mavericks will take on the Golden Bears of Concordia University in St. Paul Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the 2010 NSIC/Sanford Health Women’s Basketball Tournament.
What’s in a Win: A win Wednesday would advance the Mavericks to the semifinal round of the 2010 NSIC/Sanford Health tournament where the Mavericks would battle the winner of the Minnesota Duluth-Winona State game (taking place on Wed.). A victory would also mark the 579th win in program history and 48th win away from the Taylor Center....A win Wednesday would be the 48th win for the Mavericks under head coach Pam Gohl.
MSU-CU Notables: Wednesday’s contest will be the 20th match-up between the two teams and third this season. The Mavericks overall record with the Golden Bears is 9-10. The first time the two teams met was in 1975, when MSU defeated Concordia, 57-40. The Golden Bears came to the Taylor Center ealier this season (Jan. 15) when the Mavericks defeated-then ranked #20 Golden Bears-, 79-76. The Maverick victory handed the Golden Bears their second loss of the season and first NSIC loss. Senior forward Liz Trauger led the Mavericks with 24 points in the victory as sophomore center Laura Weber earned her first double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Mavericks then lost to Concordia on the road Feb. 12, 72-59. Seniors Liz Trauger and Tiffany Moe led the Mavericks with 13 points each as Trauger brought down nine rebounds. The Golden Bears were led by senior guard Jamie Jones with 24 points.
Golden Bear Basics: The Golden Bears ended the 2009-10 regular season with an overall record of 23-4 and 17-3 in the NSIC placing first.
In last week’s USA Today ESPN Division II Poll the Golden Bears were ranked 19th with 185 points, the only team from the NSIC to be ranked in the top-25. The four losses Concordia experienced this season were by; Michigan Tech (12/29) 82-74, Minnesota State (1/15) 79-76, Mary (1/23) 67-66, and Wayne State (1/30) 87-69. Concordia is averaging 81.6 points per game and 39.0 rebounds per game this season. Leading the Golden Bears is junior guard Maurika Hickman who is averaging 13.5 points per game followed by junior guard Jineen Williams with 12.9 points per game. Leading the board attack is senior center Gillian Bjerke with 6.5 rebounds per game.
All-Time: The 2009-10 season marks the 45th year of women’s basketball as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. MSU currently holds a 578-519 (.527) and has made three NCAA Tournament Appearances in 1986, 2008 and 2009.
Who We Are: According to official University guidelines, there are only three acceptable usages of the school name. The first official acceptable name is “Minnesota State University, Mankato” and is to only be used on the first reference of the school. Following that, the only other acceptable usages of the school name are “Minnesota State,” or “MSU”.
