Bismarck, N.D. – The Minnesota State Mavericks went on the road defeating the University of Mary, Marauders in an afternoon showing, 72-69.
Senior forward Liz Trauger opened the game for the Mavericks with the first two points off a jumper. Mary followed up with a jumper but freshman guard Sarah Wiens drained a three to give the Mavericks momentum to pull through. The Mavericks would allow Mary to have a four point lead at 10:11. MSU went on a 17-6 to take the largest lead of the half by seven points with five minutes left in the half. Foul trouble by the Mavericks sent Mary to the line with four shots and two jumpers, as MSU entered the half with a one-point deficit, 32-31.
Trauger and Wiens led the Mavericks with six points in the first half. MSU shot 34.3 percent from the field, 21.4 percent from the arc and 6-10 at the line. The Mavericks were outrebounded 25-16.
The second-half opened up as sophomore guard Lauren Barber opened up the half with a quick jumper. Three shots from the arc, two by Barber and one from Trauger along with jumper from Moe lifted the Mavericks to a nine-point lead with eight minutes left to go. MSU would hold the lead the second-half, but would allow the Marauders to come within one point with 30 seconds left in the game. Two shots from the line by sophomore guard Jennie Noreenwould clinch the win and a three-point victory for the Mavericks.
Leading the Mavericks was Barber with 16 points, Trauger with 13, Moe with 12 and freshman forward Ali Wilkinson with 11. MSU shot 44.1 percent from the field, 37.5 from the arc and went 11-20 at the line. The Mavericks were outrebounded 48-31, leading the board attack for MSU was Wilkinson with seven, Trauger and sophomore forward Laura Weber with six each.
Minnesota State now, 15-12 overall and 10-10 in the NSIC will wait for NSIC standings to come out as the NSIC championship will start next Wednesday.
