Looking Ahead: The Minnesota State Mavericks close-out the regular season as they travel to Bismarck, N.D. to take on the University of Mary Saturday at 2 p.m.
What’s in a Win: A win Saturday would mark the 578th win in program history...A victory would also mark the 47th win away from the Taylor Center....A win Saturday would be the 47th win for the Mavericks under head coach Pam Gohl.
MSU-UM Notables: Saturday’s contest against Mary will be the fifth match-up between the two teams. The Mavericks own an undefeated record against the Marauders of 4-0. the first time the two teams met was in 1985 when MSU defeated Mary, 71-66. It wasn’t until 2008 when the two teams met again, MSU won, 72-61 and then in 2009, 69-61. Earlier this season (12/11), the Mavericks hosted Mary in the Taylor Center where MSU won 68-64. Senior guard Tiffany Moe led the Mavericks with her season-high 20 points followed by senior forward Liz Trauger with 17 points. Trauger and sophomore center Laura Weber both grabbed eight rebounds.
Marauder Minute: The Marauders ended their 2008-09 season with an overall record of 15-12 and 10-10 in the NSIC.
In the 2009 NSIC Women’s Basketball Pre-Season Coaches Poll, Mary was ranked ninth, with 96 points, 80 points less than the Mavericks. The Marauders have tallied a record of 10-16 overall and 6-13 in the NSIC, tied at 11th in the NSIC. On Wed. the Marauders went on the road and defeated Minnesota Crookston, 82-70. This season Mary is averaging 69.3 points per game shooting, 42.7 percent from the field, 34.9 percent from the arc and 71.2 percent at the line. The Marauders are averaging 38.8 rebounds per game. Leading Mary in scoring is junior forward Rachel Zillmer with 10.9 points per game followed by senior center Liz Sipma with 10.5 points per game. Leading the board attack for the Marauders is junior forward Abby Bratlien with 5.1 rebounds per game, while Zillmer and Sipma are close behind with 5.0 rebounds per game.
All-Time: The 2009-10 season marks the 45th year of women’s basketball as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. MSU currently holds a 577-519 (.526) and has made three NCAA Tournament Appearances in 1986, 2008 and 2009.
Who We Are: According to official University guidelines, there are only three acceptable usages of the school name. The first official acceptable name is “Minnesota State University, Mankato” and is to only be used on the first reference of the school. Following that, the only other acceptable usages of the school name are “Minnesota State,” or “MSU”.
