Michael Dorr’s two goals, and two points from each from Mike Louwerse, Ben Youds, Tyler Pitlick and Eriah Hayes helped Minnesota State defeat Alaska Anchorage University 4-3 in front of 3,940 fans at the Verizon Center Saturday night.
Combined with a 5-2 win, the Mavericks swept the home league series over the Seawolves.
Eriah Hayes’ wrap around centering pass set up winger Michael Dorr, for the first of his two goals on the night, late in the first period to give Minnesota State the early lead. Freshman Tyler Pitlick also assisted on the Dorr goal.
Alaska Anchorage answered right back with 3:10 remaining in the first period as Kevin Clark found a loose puck in front of the net and capitalized after falling down to his back.
MSU continued the scoring barrage as they scored once again via the connection of Hayes to Dorr. With a penalty pending, Dorr fired a slap shot from the blue line that beat UAA goaltender Jon Olthuis at 17:45
The fast paced action continued into the second period as MSU scored on a power play. Defensemen Ben Youds finished off a patient Maverick attack as he beat Olthuis high on his stick side with a slap shot from the point at 9:32.
UAA continued to go blow for blow with MSU as winger Mitch Bruijsten answered right back on the Seawolve’s next trip into the Maverick zone. Tyler Currier and Curtis Leinweber both tallied assists on the Bruusten goal. Josh Lunden then tallied the equalizer for the Seawolves at 14:42 with UAA on the power play
MSU’s Mike Louwerse found the back of the net late in the third period for the game winner, when he punched the puck past Olthuis at the 15-minute mark. Louwerse was set up by an excellent feed from Youds and Pitlick, his second assist of the game.
UAA outshot MSU 29-25 on the night. Maverick freshman goaltender Phil Cook recorded 26 saves while Seawolves netminder John Olthuis had 21 stops.
MSU, now boasting a 14-16-2 record overall and 8-15-1 in WCHA action, host the University of Denver next weekend in a WCHA series with the puck dropping Friday at 7:07.
