ROSEMOUNT, MINN. --- The Minnesota State softball team opened the 2010 season with a sweep over Concordia University in the Irish Sports Dome in Rosemount, Minn.
The Mavericks won the opening game – which featured a 7:30 am first-pitch – 7-2. Minnesota State pounded out seven hits in the win and was paced by sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl who worked six innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five. Sophomore Katie Kruse worked the seventh and allowed one run on two hits.
The Mavericks scored at least one run in each of the first four innings, including a three-run first and a two-run third inning. Sophomore leftfielder Chelsea Erickson went 1-for-3 in the game with a homerun and drove in a team-high three runs. Senior catcher Kelsey Thompson went 2-for-3 with two RBI and junior third baseman Julie O'Nealwent 2-for-2 from the plate with two runs scored.
In the second game of the day, the Mavericks blasted four homeruns while pounding out 10 hits en route to a 9-4 victory.
MSU’s first four runs came on solo homeruns off the bats of Thompson, sophomore rightfielder Amanda Umhoefer, senior shortstop Libbie Reichling and O’Neal en route to a 4-2 lead through five innings.
The Mavericks added five more runs in the top of the sixth to secure the win.
Redshirt freshman pitcher Courtney McKelvogue picked up the victory, working six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking two. Kruse worked the final inning.
Thompson went 2-for-2 from the plate, while O’Neal pounded out two hits in three trips with two RBI and a run scored. Junior first baseman Natalie Spicer went 1-for-4 from the plate with three runs batted in and a run scored.
Minnesota State’s next scheduled games are not until March 6th, when it travels to Kissimmee, Fla., to play Shippensburg and Georgian Court to open the 2010 Rebel Spring Games. However, with the cancellation of the Colorado trip earlier this week, MSU may try to pick up additional games in the Rosemount Sports Dome.
