St. Paul, Minn.—The Minnesota State Mavericks traveled to St. Paul, Minn., to battle the Golden Bears of Concordia University Friday evening and were defeated, 72-59.
Opening the game the Golden Bears earned the first jumper, as the first five minutes of play battled back and forth within two points before the Golden Bears when on a 10-0 run taking a 10-point lead over the Mavericks at 11:30. Senior forward Liz Trauger downed three-straight jumpers to bring the Mavericks back within six points. Concordia took a nine-point lead at the six-minute mark before the Mavericks would rally back within one point off of two shots from the arc, one by sophomore guard Jennie Noreen the other by sophomore guard Lauren Barber and a jumper by senior guard Tiffany Moe. The Golden Bears would close out the half adding five more points, leading the Mavericks 34-28.
The Mavericks were led by Moe with nine points and Trauger posting eight points bringing down five rebounds. MSU shot 38.5 percent from the field dishing out six assists, while being outrebounded by one, 16-15. The first half encompassed two lead changes and a tied score four times.
The Mavericks opened up the second half allowing the Golden Bears to tally two points before Noreen drilled a shot from the arc, followed by a jumper from Moe, which brought the Mavericks within three. Barber sank a shot from the arc to tie the game at 16:58. Concordia put down two jumpers before the Mavericks would rally and take a short one-point lead at the 14 minute mark. The Golden Bears pulled away taking a 13-point lead at 4:36, they would hold onto finishing out the game with, 72-59.
MSU shot 40.0 percent from the field, 20.8 percent from the arc and 83.3 percent at the line. The Mavericks were led by seniors Trauger and Moe both posting 13 points, followed by Barber with 11 points. Trauger grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as the Mavericks lost the battle of the boards, 42-33. MSU dished out 12 assists taking four steals from Concordia.
Minnesota State now 13-10 overall and 8-8 in the NSIC will travel to St. Cloud to take on the Huskies of St. Cloud State tomorrow at 4 p.m.
