Mankato, Minn. ---  Sophomore goaltender Phil Cook turned aside a career-high 49 saves in giving Minnesota State a 2-1 win over #17 Minnesota Saturday as the Mavericks completed a home sweep of its Western Collegiate Hockey Association series.

The Mavericks had downed the Gophers the previous night by a 3-2 margin and have now won five of the last eight meetings between the two schools.

For the second consecutive night the Mavericks lit the lamp first, this time with less than a minute left in the second period, when senior Rylan Galiardi jabbed one in over the right shoulder of Gopher goaltender Kent Patterson at 19:11.

Then senior defenseman Kurt Davis stole the puck in the neutral zone and blasted a slap shot past Patterson on the glove side at 8:59 in the second period to give MSU a 2-0 lead. UM answered back at 9:38 when senior Cade Fairchild put the pick in off the crossbar for the only Gopher goal of the night as the two teams battled through a scoreless third period.

UM owned a 50-32 edge in shots on goal in the game and the goal by Davis is his third career game-winning marker.

The Mavericks, now on a four-game winning streak, improve to 6-6-4 overall (4-6-2 WCHA), with the Gophers falling to 8-7-1 (5-6-1 WCHA) on the season.  The last time MSU had a four-game winning streak was during the 2007-08 campaign when the Mavericks put together a seven-game skein that included sweeps over St. Cloud State, Denver, Alaska Anchorage and a win over Wisconsin.

MSU is home again next weekend, taking on the University of North Dakota Friday and Saturday.
