Power Play Propels MSU to RPI Sweep

MANKATO, Minn. – A pair of power play goals Saturday helped Minnesota State top RPI 2-1 as the Mavericks completed the weekend sweep in non-conference men's hockey.

The Mavericks (3-1-2) also defeated the Engineers (0-6-0) on Friday 4-2. Goaltender Alex Tracy (Chicago, Ill.) made 29 saves for MSU as RPI outshot the home team 30-18.

After a 3-on-2 rush resulted in a pad save by RPI goaltender Bruno Bruveris, Filip Sitar skated nearly the length of the ice and wristed in the game's first goal 13 seconds before the horn at the end of the first period.

Senior Felikss Gavars (Riga, Latvia) tied it at 12:42 of the second period on the power play with his first goal as a Maverick. Reid Morich sent the puck to Luigi Benincasa, who made a pass to the middle of the slot for Gavars' one-timer. RPI led 17-13 in shots on goal after 40 minutes.

Tracy helped the Mavericks with an outstanding save at the five-minute mark of the third period. After making the initial stop, Tracy reached back with the inside of his stick and gathered it in for a stoppage of play.

Inside ten minutes remaining in regulation, the Mavericks killed their third minor penalty to preserve the lead.

With four power play goals on the weekend, MSU continued its efficiency on special teams and are scoring on 37.9-percent of opportunities.

Minnesota State heads into CCHA competition next week with a home-and-home series against St. Thomas. The Mavericks will play at Lee and Penny Anderson Arena on Halloween at 7:07 p.m., then return on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 6:07 p.m.
