Box Score Rohrnet Park, Calif. — The Minnesota State men's basketball overcame a sluggish first half en route to a 64-51 victory over Dominican University of California, Friday evening in the Ron Logsdon Classic hosted by Sonoma State University.
The Mavericks were limited to just 25 points in the first half, taking a 25-20 advantage into the break. The 25 points marked the fewest first half points by the Mavericks since Jan. 31, 2009, when they scored just 23 points in the first half at Minnesota Duluth.
"We'll never make an excuse for a win, especially on the road," said head coach
Matt Margenthaler. "We did a lot of uncharacteristic things today, a lot of unforced turnovers. You can't do that and we got to get better."
Junior guard
Stephen Kirschbaum drilled consecutive three-pointers in the final minutes of the first half to turn a 19-all tie into a 25-20 edge at the break.
The Mavericks opened the second half by maintaining their lead until senior guard Marcus Hill drilled a three-pointer at the 4:54 mark to put MSU up 14, 59-45. The Mavericks maintained that double-digit for the remainder of the game.
Senior wing
Jefferson Mason led the Mavericks with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Krischbaum and Hill each added 10 points. Junior center
Mitch Grundman came off the bench and scored four points while hauling in a career-high seven rebounds.
The Mavericks finished the game shooting 35.3 percent from the floor, including an icy 25.9 (7-of-27) from the three-point line.
Minnesota State owned the battle of the glass, 37-24, including 15-4 on the offensive glass. The Mavericks scored 14 second-chance points and had 23 points come off the bench.
Minnesota State (1-0) concludes the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic Saturday against Notre Dame de Namur. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m., CST.
