What's Up: The Minnesota State men's basketball team opens the 2010-11 season this weekend with a trip to Rohnert Park, Calif., to participate in the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic hosted by Sonoma State.
A Little Bit About the Event: Minnesota State will open the event against Dominican University of California on Friday before playing Notre Dame de Namur Saturday. Both games are slated to start at 5:30 p.m., local time, 7:30 p.m., Central Standard time.
Scouting Dominican University of California: The Penguins finished the 2009-910 season with a 10-17 record, including a 7-9 finish in the Pacific West Conference, which was good for a tie for fifth place. DU is returns four starters from last year's squad, including sophomore guard Austin Bryan who led the team as a freshman a year ago with a 19.3 point per game average. Junior Xander McNally hit on an impressive 54.4 percent of his attempts a year ago and is the also the leading returning rebounder at 3.8 per game. The Penguins are coached by Bret Tovani who is in his fifth season with the program and owns a 74-71 record.
Scouting Notre Dame de Namur: The Argonauts are coming of a 2009-10 campaign in which it finished 4-23, including a 2-14 record in the Pacific West Conference. Senior center Nick Storment is the leading returning scorer and rebounder for the Argos after averaging 9.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game a year ago. George Puou is in his 10th season with the program and is 98-144 during his time in Belmont, Calif. NDNU opens its season Friday night against Sonoma State.
