Box Score Columbus, Ohio ---Â The Minnesota State women's hockey team defeated the OSU Buckeyes, 4-3, giving them its second sweep of the young season.
The last time MSU swept Ohio State was in the 2008-09 season, when they swept the Buckeyes on 2/20-2/21. The last time the Mavericks swept two WCHA opponents was in 2008-09, when they swept Bemidji State and Ohio State.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 12:45 mark in the first period after sophomore forward Lauren Smith netted an even-strength goal. Assisting on the score was freshman defenseman Danielle Scholzen and rookie Kathleen Rogan. Scholzen's assist marked the first point of her career.
Just 3:02 after their opening goal, at the 15:45 mark, rookie forward Kari Lundberg put the Mavericks up 2-0 with an even-strength tally. Rookies Melissa Klippensein and Nicole Germaine assisted on the goal.
MSU continued to apply pressure, going up 3-0 when senior forward Nina Tikkinen tallied an short-handed goal at the 16:37 mark of the first that was assisted by senior defenseman Amy Udvig and junior blueliner Jackie Otto.
Ohio State cut its deficit to one goal after a pair of tallies in the second period. The Buckeyes first goal came just :35 after the first intermission, scored by Shannon Reilly and assisted by Laura McIntosh and Kelly Wild. OSU's second, a power play tally at the 18:07 mark in the second period, scored by Hokey Langan and assisted by Kelly Wild and Laura McIntosh.
Midway through the third, OSU knotted things up with another power play tally from Langan. However, Tikkinen gave MSU the game-winner with 3:45 left in regulation. Rogan and Otto tallied helpers on the game-winner.
Rookie netminder Danielle Butters finished the contest with 22 saves, while OSU goaltender Lisa Steffes finished with 23.
The Mavericks outshot OSU, 27-25. The Mavericks finished the contest 0-for-2 on power play chances, while OSU went 2-for-6.
The Minnesota State women's hockey squad will return home for a WCHA-series with the Minnesota Gophers. Friday's contest is slated for 7:07 p.m., while Saturday's is scheduled for 3:07 p.m.
