Looking Ahead: The Minnesota State Mavericks will travel to Fayette, Iowa to take on the Peacocks of Upper Iowa University, Friday evening at 6 p.m. The Mavericks will then travel to Winona, Minn. to take on the Warriors of Winona State Saturday at 5 p.m.
What’s in a Win: A win Friday would mark the 572nd win in program history...A victory would also mark the 45th win away from the Taylor Center....It would also mark the sixth consecutive win against the Peacocks...A win Friday would be the 41st win for the Mavericks under head coach Pam Gohl.
MSU-UIU Notables: Friday’s game against Upper Iowa will be the sixth match-up between the two teams. MSU is undefeated against the Peacocks with a record of 5-0. The first time the two teams met was back in 1979, MSU defeated the Peacocks, 79-55. Last season, MSU defeated Upper Iowa at the Taylor Center, 87-77.
Peacock Points: The Peacocks ended their 2008-09 campaign with an overall record of 5-22 and 1-19 in the NSIC. The Peacocks averaged 65.9 points per game last season.
In the 2009 NSIC Women’s Basketball Pre-Season Coaches Poll, Upper Iowa was ranked 14th. The Peacocks have started their 2009-10 season 1-11 overall and 0-6 in the NSIC, averaging 63.9 points per game. Senior forward Kenya Howard leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.5 points per game this season, followed by junior guard Heidi McKean who is averaging 12.0 points per game. The Peacocks are coached by Mike Brown (third season), assisted by Stephanie Reiter and Alan Seabrooke.
MSU-WSU Notables: Saturday’s game against Winona State will be the 40th match-up between the two teams. MSU holds a winning record against the Warriors of 28-11. The first time the two teams met was in 1969 when the Mavericks defeated the Warriors, 60-23. In the 2008-09 season Minnesota State defeated the Warriors 74-59, at the Taylor Center. The last time the Mavericks played the Warriors at McGown Gymnasium was during the 2004-05 season where the Mavericks defeated the Warriors 80-57. This season at the 2009 HoopsFest tournament in Souix Falls, S.D., the Mavericks experienced their first loss of the season to the Warriors, 60-59, also the first loss to the Warriors since 2003.
Warrior Ways: The Warriors ended their 2008-09 campaign with an overall record of 24-7 and placed second in the NSIC with a conference record of 15-5. Winona Sate returns two starters losing three from last season. Top returner for the Warrios is senior guard, Ana Wurtz who averaged 16.5 ppg last season.
In the 2009 NSIC Women’s Basketball Pre-Season Coaches Poll, Winona State was ranked fifth. The Warriors have started their 2009-10 season 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the NSIC, averaging 69.1 ppg. Senior guard Ana Wurtz leads the team in scoring averaging 13.7 ppg followed by sophomore forward Michelle McDonald averaging 10.3 ppg. The Warriors are coached by Scott Ballard and associate head coaches, Shanon Schonrock and Cory Ballard.
All-Time: The 2009-10 season marks the 45th year of women’s basketball as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. MSU currently holds a 571-511 (.528) and has made three NCAA Tournament Appearances in 1986, 2008 and 2009.
Who We Are: According to official University guidelines, there are only three acceptable usages of the school name. The first official acceptable name is “Minnesota State University, Mankato” and is to only be used on the first reference of the school. Following that, the only other acceptable usages of the school name are “Minnesota State,” or “MSU”.
