Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State Mavericks dominate the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth, 92-80 Saturday evening in the Taylor Center.
The win marks the 574th in program history and the 81st in the Taylor Center. It also marks the 23rd victory over the Bulldogs.
After allowing the Bulldogs to post the first two points of the game, the Mavericks battled back with a 10-0 scoring spree, to open a 10-point lead with 14 minutes left in the half. The Bulldogs came back tying the game at the 10 minute mark. The Mavericks never allowed the Bulldogs to take the lead as MSU closed out the half with a two-point lead, 41-39.
Leading the half for the Mavericks was freshman guard Sarah Wiens with 11 points and sophomore guard Jennie Noreen with 10 points and five rebounds. The Mavericks shot 48.5 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the arc. The Maverick bench tallied 15 points.
The Mavericks opened the second half sinking the first six shots, posting14 to the Bulldogs five points. MSU kept the strong lead taking a 14-point lead with 12 minutes left in the game. Senior forward Liz Trauger and Wiens both posted four shots from the arc, giving the Mavericks a push to close out the game. Wiens tallied the last points off a layup for the Mavericks.
Trauger led the Mavericks with 17 points, earning her 1,000th career-point, being the 17th Maverick to do so. Sophomore center Laura Weber, Noreen and Wiens all tallied 16 points, a season-high for Wiens. Senior guard Tiffany Moe followed up with 14 points dishing out six assists. Weber grabbed a team-high of nine rebounds.
MSU shot 55 percent from the field and 50 percent from the arc, going 16-19 at the line. The Mavericks dished out 18 assists, while the bench tallied 20 points.
The Mavericks now, 11-9 overall and 6-7 in the NSIC will return home Friday to host Minnesota-Crookston at 6 p.m.
