Houghton, Mich. --- After absorbing a 4-1 loss Friday, Minnesota State responded with a 3-2 win at Michigan Tech in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Saturday in Houghton.
The Mavericks, who owned a 13-10 advantage in shots on goal in the opening frame, scored the only goal of the period. Junior forward Rylan Galiardi pounced on a puck that had leaked through the pads of Kevin Genoe and pushed it into the net at 9:51.
It became a 2-0 MSU lead at 12:09 after freshman forward Eriah Hayes deflected Michael Dorr’s shot past Genoe. Tech cut the deficit to one at 19:50 when Brett Olson tapped Jordan Baker’s shot past Maverick freshman Phil Cook.
The third period saw senior forward Kael Mouillierat register his eighth goal of the year at 12:23 and his eighth career game-winning goal when he scored with a shot that beat Genoe low on the stickside. The Huskies responded at 16:14 for the game’s final goal on a power play marker by Olson.
Cook, who stopped 30 shots in the win, upped his record to 4-1-1 for the season and Galiardi, who extended his point-scoring streak to three games, fashioned a two-point night with an assist on the goal by Eriah Hayes.
The Mavericks, who put a season-high 45 shots on goal in the game, now stand 12-14-2 overall, 6-13-1 WCHA. Michigan Tech falls to 4-21-1 with the loss and is 3-17-0 in league action.
MSU takes next weekend off prior to playing at the University of Wisconsin Feb. 12-13.
