Maverick Icers Fall to Providence Friars in Easton Holiday Showcase

Box Score St. Cloud, Minn. --- Minnesota State wrapped up St. Cloud State's Easton Holiday Showcase with a non-conference loss to the Providence Friars, 2-0.

The Mavericks and Friars played a scoreless first period of hockey with MSU out shooting Providence, 11-10. Maverick goaltender Alli Altmann (Eagan, Minn.) shutdown the Friar attack in the first with 10 saves.

Early in the second period the first penalty of the game was called putting Providence on the power play; junior defenseman Amy Udvig (New Brighton, Minn.) was called for a body check. The Friars quickly took advantage of the extra-skater when junior forward Alyse Ruff scored off of a rebound to put PC up 1-0. Assists on the goal came from junior forward Jean O'Neill and rookie forward Jessica Cohen.

The Mavericks out shot the Friars in the second period, 10-7.

Midway through the third period PC netted their second goal of the contest. Ruff tallied her second goal of the game on assists from senior forward Arianna Rigano and junior blueliner Leigh Riley.

The Mavericks and the Friars each finished the non-conference battle with 31 shots. Altmann earned 29 saves in the game.

The Mavericks will travel to Bemidji, Minn. next weekend, January 8 and 9 to take on the Beavers of Bemidji State. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. on Friday and 3:07 p.m. on Saturday.
