Hewitt and O’Connor Tally Goals in Mavericks 3-2 Loss to Ohio State

Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s hockey team wrapped up their series at home with the Buckeyes of Ohio State on Saturday afternoon, but couldn’t hold on to their 2-1 lead heading into the third period and fell to OSU, 3-2.

After losing to the Buckeyes 6-0 Friday night, the Mavericks took the 1-0 at the 11:37 mark on a goal from senior forward Jenna Hewitt  (Anoka, Minn.). Hewitt was assisted by freshman Lauren Zrust (Blaine, Minn.) on the play. The goal marked Hewitt’s first goal of the season and Zrust recorded her first career assist as a Maverick on the first period score.

OSU answered back minutes later as right winger Hokey Langan beat MSU goaltender Alli Altmann (Eagan, Minn.) at the 17:28 mark in the first. McIntosh and LaRocque both recorded assists on the goal. 

MSU regained momentum early in the second period when center Moira O’Connor(Chicago, Ill.) beat OSU netminder Chelsea Knapp glove side.  Christina Lee (Maple Plain, Minn.) and Amy Udvig (New Brighton, Minn.) both had helpers on the go ahead goal.   

Two early third period goals erased the Buckeye deficit and gave them a 3-2 lead. Natalie Spooner recorded the equalizer and Langan’s second goal of the afternoon gave Ohio State the lead for good.

Altmann finished the contest with 28 saves. The Mavericks finished the contest 0-5 with the extra skater and OSU finished 0-3 on power plays.

Minnesota State University, now 4-13-5 record overall and 2-11-5-3 in WCHA action will play host to the University of Minnesota Duluth next weekend with the puck dropping at 7:07 p.m. on Friday night and 3:07 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
