Mankato, Minn.—The 11th-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks defeated the Wolves of Northern State, 72-56, Saturday evening at the Taylor Center.
The win marks the 571st victory in program history and 79th victory at the Taylor Center.
The Wolves came out with the first two points of the game, but the Mavericks came out strong with sophomore guard, Jennie Noreenputting down three straight three-point shots. MSU never gave the lead up to the Wolves.
Minnesota State kept the lead by putting down nine three-point shots, shooting 64 percent from the three point mark and 51 percent from the field, in the first half. MSU scored four points off of fast break plays and eight points off of Northern State turnovers. The Mavericks dished out 15 assists in the first half.
Leading the Mavericks in the first half was Noreen, breaking her career-high of 21 points with 22 points and bringing down five rebounds. Contributing to the lead was sophomore guard Lauren Barberwith nine points. MSU’s largest lead came at 5:41 left in the first half leading by 25 points. The Wolves came back within 15 points at the half. MSU led 47-32 going into the second half.
Entering the second half with a 15-point lead, the Mavericks started off allowing the Wolves to score a three-point shot first. Senior forward Liz Trauger put down a free-throw shot and three point shot for the Mavericks. Northern State went on a scoring spree coming within three points of the Mavericks with 11:16 left in the second half; this would be the closest the Wolves came within MSU.
The Mavericks finished the game shooting 75 percent at the free-throw line, 45 percent at the three point mark and 41 percent from the field. MSU handed out 20 assists, grabbing eight steals and seven blocks in the victory.
Leading the Mavericks with a career-high 27 points, Noreen also tied MSU’s record for most three-point shots made in a single game with seven. Noreen also grabbed seven rebounds, six assists. Senior guard Tiffany Moe scored 12 points while Trauger put down 10 points in the game.
The Mavericks now 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC, will hit the road next week traveling to Bemidji Minn. to battle the Beavers of Bemidji State, Saturday at 3 p.m.
