Minnesota State and #2 Denver Battle to 4-4 Overtime Tie Saturday
Pitlick Scores Twice , Schiller Gets First Career Goal and Youds Has Three Assists

Denver, Colo.  ---    Four periods could not separate Minnesota State and second-rated Denver in Saturday’s 4-4 overtime tie in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action at DU’s Magness Arena.

The game featured 77 shots on goal, 12 power play opportunities and three lead changes.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead with the first goal of the game coming on a slap shot from the deep slot by sophomore blueliner Joe Schiller at 5:26. The goal is the first of Schiller’s career. The second goal came on the power play at 9:30 on shot from the top of the right circle by freshman forward Tyler Pitlick. That goal, too, is the first of Pitlick’s career. The Pioneers responded at 14:48 after Drew Shore’s shot bounced off of freshman netminder Kevin Murdock with DU on the power play. Tyler Ruegsegger’s power play goal, which came on a rebound attempt at 15:32, tied the game at 2-2.

The two teams traded second-period goals with DU’s Anthony Miani scoring at 7:24 and then, with MSU on a five-on-three power play, Pitlick got his second goal of the night at 15:06 on a one-timer which followed passes from Zach Harrison and Ben Youds.

The third period saw MSU take a 4-3 lead at 10:11 after senior forward Kael Mouillierat got his first goal of the season when he tipped a Ben Youds’ shot for a power play goal. Kyle Ostrow knotted the score yet again when he batted a bouncing puck past Murdock at 14:57.

MSU junior defenseman Ben Youds was credited with a career-game high three assists in the contest.

Although both teams had chances in the extra session, neither the Mavericks or the Pioneers were able to score.

MSU’s Kevin Murdock was credited with 40 saves in the game, while DU freshman Adam Murray had 30 stops.

MSU, which was three-for-six in power play opportunities, is now 3-4-1 on the year, 1-4-1 WCHA. Denver, meanwhile, went one-for-six on the power play and now stands 5-2-1, 3-0-1 WCHA on the year.

The Mavericks take next weekend off before resuming league action Nov. 13-14 in Mankato when they host Colorado College.
