Denver, Colo.  ---    Minnesota State went toe-to-toe with second-rated Denver Friday but came up one goal short in a falling 4-3 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played at DU’s Magness Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the two teams erupted for four goals in the first four minutes of the second frame.

MSU junior forward Rylan Galiardi struck for his third goal of the year on a shot he roofed past DU’s Marc Cheverie at 0:32. The goal snapped a 223:51 shut-out streak by Cheverie, who had not been scored on in more than three games.

The Pioneers evened things up at 1:30 on a Jesse Martin backhander that got past MSU sophomore Austin Lee high on the glove side. The Mavericks came right back on a shot from the side at 2:08 from junior forward Andrew Sackrison that seemed to surprise Cheverie. Then, at 3:50, sophomore forward Joe Colborne deflected Patrick Wierciosh’s shot from the point past Lee for a DU power play marker to make it 2-2.

DU ‘s Jesse Martin got his second goal of the game an a snap shot to Lee’s stick side just after the Pioneers had killed off a penalty at 4:50 of the final frame.  It became a 4-2 Denver lead at 7:30 after Matt Glasser tipped Luke Salazar’s pass past Lee.  MSU closed out the scoring when freshman forward Eriah Hayes ripped a shot past Adam Murray at 11:59 to make it 4-3. MSU’s Sackrison got the lone assist on the goal as Hayes got his third goal of the season on Murray who had replaced an injured Cheverie a few minutes earlier.

MSU, which was zereo-for-five in power play opportunities, is now 3-4-0 on the year, 1-4-0 WCHA. Denver, meanwhile, went one-for-five on the power play and now stands 5-2-0, 3-0-0 WCHA on the year.
