ABERDEEN, S.D. — The Minnesota State Mavericks continued their strong season on Saturday, sweeping Northern State in a doubleheader at Fossum Field with commanding 13–0 and 13–2 victories. With the wins, MSU improves to 34-10 on the season, while the Wolves fall to 12-25.
Game 1: Minnesota State 13, Northern State 0
Minnesota State opened the day with a dominant 13–0 shutout, highlighted by a 10-run fifth inning that broke the game wide open.
Holding a 3–0 lead entering the fifth, the Mavericks capitalized on control issues from Northern State, drawing 15 walks in the game and turning free passes into runs. The inning's biggest moment came from
Ethan Bowers, who launched a grand slam to left-center, scoring four runs after
Pambos Nicoloudes reached on an error and both
Brandon Vlcko and
Logan Miller worked walks to load the bases.
The Mavericks manufactured offense throughout the game.
Jake Berkland sparked the first inning with a double and later scored on a groundout by
Louis Magers. Berkland added another strong performance on the basepaths, collecting two doubles and swiping a base.
On the mound,
Daniel Zang delivered five shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four.
Ben Llewellyn followed in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts to preserve the shutout.
Bowers finished with five RBIs to lead the offense, while Nicoloudes added two runs and two RBIs in the win.
Game 2: Minnesota State 13, Northern State 2
The Mavericks carried their momentum into game two, securing another decisive win behind a balanced offensive attack and strong pitching.
Minnesota State struck early with a five-run second inning. After loading the bases,
Cole Yearsley delivered a key three-RBI double to center field to clear the bases.
Louis Magers followed with an RBI double to extend the lead.
The Mavericks continued to apply pressure at the plate, finishing with 16 hits, including three doubles and a triple.
Ethan Bowers added to his standout day with a triple and two RBIs, while
Logan Miller recorded three hits and scored a run.
Northern State managed two runs in the seventh inning, but the Mavericks quickly shut down any momentum and maintained control throughout.
Cale Haugen got the start, throwing two hitless innings with three strikeouts. The bullpen combined to allow just five hits while striking out eight, with
Kaeden Guida,
Chas Melvin,
Brody Schulte, and
Lucas Tolle each contributing in relief.
Yearsley led the offense in game two with five RBIs, while Bowers and Miller continued their strong performances at the plate.
"Anytime we go on the road in our conference and come away with a sweep, that says a lot about your group." said head coach
Matt Magers. "Offensively, we stayed disciplined throughout the day and continued to put pressure on them. On the mound, our depth showed with seven different arms contributing, and each guy did his job to help us close out the series."
Minnesota State returns home to Bowyer Field on Tuesday, April 28, where they will host St. Cloud State at 1:30 p.m. CT.
