Mavericks Power Past St. Cloud State in Doubleheader Sweep

MANKATO, Minn. Minnesota State (35-10, 27-5 NSIC) swept St. Cloud State (20-26, 16-17 NSIC) in a Tuesday doubleheader at Bowyer Field, earning a 12–1 win in Game 1 and an 8–2 victory in Game 2.

Game 1 – Minnesota State 12, St. Cloud State 1

The Mavericks powered past the Huskies behind a six-run fifth inning and a pair of home runs.

Minnesota State jumped out early with a three-run first inning. Cole Yearsley drew a walk and advanced on a single by CJ Trask before Charlie Schau delivered a two-run single through the right side. Logan Miller added another run with a sacrifice bunt that extended the early lead.

The Mavericks broke the game open in the fifth inning, highlighted by Brandon Vlcko's three-run home run to left field that scored Miller and Schau. CJ Trask followed with a two-run homer, capping a six-run frame fueled by timely hitting and a St. Cloud State defensive miscue.

The Huskies scored their lone run in the sixth on a groundout RBI, but the Mavericks' defense held steady the rest of the way.

Sam George earned the win, allowing just one earned run on four hits over six innings while striking out seven without issuing a walk. Brady Nelson worked a scoreless seventh to close it out.

Trask led the offense with three hits, including a home run and three RBIs. Vlcko added a two-hit performance with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Berkland contributed two RBIs.

Game 2 – Minnesota State 8, St. Cloud State 2

Minnesota State completed the sweep with a balanced offensive attack and another strong pitching performance.

The Mavericks struck early again, as CJ Trask launched a two-run home run in the first inning. Louis Magers added to the lead in the second with a three-run blast, stretching the advantage and setting the tone for MSU's offense.

Minnesota State continued to pressure the Huskies with aggressive baserunning. Cole Yearsley and Jake Berkland each stole bases, with Berkland eventually scoring on Magers' home run.

Berkland added a double in the fourth and later scored on a Trask sacrifice fly. St. Cloud State scored its only runs in the eighth on a two-run double, but the Mavericks remained in control throughout.

Mack Crowley was dominant on the mound, tossing seven shutout innings while allowing just three hits and striking out 10. Nick Johnson and Ben Irsfeld combined to finish the final two innings.

Berkland finished with three hits, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Trask added three RBIs with a home run and sacrifice fly, while Magers drove in three runs with a home run and double.

"I thought we had great pitching from Sam George and Mack Crowley. Both of them going deep in the game put us in a position to be really successful." Said head coach Matt Magers. "Offensively scoring six runs in the first two innings of the second game really allowed us to settle in, and defensively we played error free baseball."

Minnesota State returns to Bowyer Field to host Minnesota Duluth on Friday, May 1 at 1:30 p.m.
