Maverick Men’s Golf Competes in Day One of Desert Classic

GOODYEAR, Ariz. --- The Minnesota State men's golf team wrapped up round one of the Desert Classic Monday in seventh place.

The two-round Desert Classic is being held at the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz. The Mavericks are one of 13 teams competing in the Desert Classic.

"We're happy to be out on grass for the first time since the fall and competing," head coach Alex Schmitz said." We started out really well, but could definitely tell we got a little tied at the end."

Washburn leads the overall team standings as the Ichabods finished round one with a 279 (-9). The Mavericks finished the day shooting a 294 (+6) to finish the round tied for seventh.

Sophomore Michael Johnson and senior Hogan Ordal led the way for the Mavericks in round one as they both shot a 73 (+1) to finish the round in a tie for 20th. Johnson recorded four birdies, while Ordal tallied two.

Junior Karson Patten and freshman Paul Rezko finished one shot behind Johnson and Ordal with scores of 74 (+2) to finish the round in a tie for 27th place. Patten notched three birdies in round one, while Rezko tallied two.

Junior Jack Schrader finished round one in 55th place with a 78 (+6), while freshman Sam Swavely (Ind.) turned in a 76 (+4) to finish the day in 47th place. Schrader and Swavely each recorded a pair of birdies in their opening round.
