DAVENPORT, Fla. — The Mavericks (11-6) fell 5-2 to Wayne State (11-2) Monday in Davenport, Fla., after the Warriors scored four runs in the fifth inning to take control.
Minnesota State opened the scoring in the fourth when Ethan Bowers and CJ Trask hit back-to-back singles before Pambos Nicoloudes drove in a run with a groundout. Wayne State answered in the fifth with a double, an RBI single and a three-run home run to build a 5-1 lead.
The Mavericks added a run in the eighth after Cole Yearsley singled and later scored on a Trask groundout but were unable to close the gap.
Brady Nelson started for Minnesota State and allowed one earned run over three innings with three strikeouts. Nick Johnson added two scoreless innings in relief.
Bowers finished with a hit, a run and two walks, while Trask recorded a hit and an RBI.
Minnesota State returns to action Tuesday, March 10, against California (Pa.) to finish up the RussMatt Invitational at 9 a.m. CT in Davenport, Fla.
