Mavericks Drop Regional Game to Minnesota Duluth

MANKATO, Minn. — The Minnesota State women's basketball team (29-3, 21-2 NSIC) faced a tough challenge inside the Taylor Center, on Friday (March 13) falling to Minnesota Duluth (21-8, 18-5 NSIC), 72-63, despite forcing 25 turnovers in the NCAA Regionals. The Bulldogs powered through with a 22-point third quarter, overcoming the No.5-ranked Mavericks' 14 steals.

Senior guard Natalie Bremer was a standout for MSU, scoring 18 points and snagging four steals. Rhyan Holmgren chipped in 13 points, nailing every free throw she attempted. Adeline Kent added six points and four steals, while Mackenzie Schweim put up 12 points and grabbed four rebounds.

The Mavericks came out strong in the first quarter, turning turnovers into points quickly. Schweim and Bremer sparked a 10–6 run in the paint, leveraging defensive stops for fast breaks. A critical layup by Holmgren kept the team in front despite some shaky moments.

Minnesota Duluth battled back to tie the game and then edged ahead. Key free throws in the final seconds tipped the score, and the Mavericks found themselves trailing 18–15 at the quarter's end.

In the second quarter, MSU ramped up the defensive intensity, forcing turnovers and sparking a scoring surge. Bremer led the charge, scoring in the paint and hitting a crucial 3-pointer that brought MSU within one point. Perfect from the free-throw line, the Mavericks went 5-for-5, which was crucial for maintaining their momentum.

Kent's layup with 30 seconds left tied it up, and her free throws with two seconds remaining gave MSU a two-point lead, closing the half at 35–33.

The third quarter saw the Mavericks start with energy, as Schweim's early layup widened the lead. Defensive pressure led to more steals from Kent and Bremer, keeping control momentarily. However, the Bulldogs clawed back to tie with a couple of layups.

Minnesota State responded with Hannah Herzig's free throws and a Bremer layup to regain a brief lead. Yet, the Bulldogs took advantage of turnovers and rebounds, shifting the game in their favor. Despite Hannah Leverson's crucial 3-pointer for MSU, the Bulldogs' consistent scoring turned the tide, and the third quarter ended 55-48 in favor of UMD.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Mavericks aimed to close the gap. Bremer's early 3-pointer cut into the lead, but the Bulldogs maintained their advantage..

The Mavericks continued to push, with key baskets from Holmgren and Schweim. Despite a late push from MSU, the Bulldogs held firm, securing a 72-63 win.
