#2 Mavericks Clinch NSIC South, Remain Undefeated with Senior Day Win

MANKATO, Minn. — The Minnesota State women's basketball team put on a show for Senior Day, honoring seven seniors and besting Southwest Minnesota State (13-10, 11-7 NSIC) with a 79-71 victory at the Taylor Center. A packed house of 3,427 fans on Saturday, Feb. 7, witnessed one of the season's largest Division II crowds. The No. 2-ranked Mavericks' relentless defense forced 41 turnovers, snagging 20 steals, and racking up 38 points off those turnovers.

With this win, MSU remains the lone undefeated team in Division II, boasting a flawless 24-0 record overall and an 18-0 tally in the NSIC.

Senior guard Natalie Bremer was the offensive powerhouse, tallying 20 points and five steals. Freshman Haylee Stokes was perfect from the line, hitting all 14 of her free throws and grabbing two steals. Mackenzie Schweim added 12 points, including a three-pointer, while Ava Stier pulled down seven rebounds and nailed a three-pointer.

The Mavericks set the tone early in the first quarter, jumping out to a lead with staunch defense and capitalizing on turnovers. Stier's three-pointer at 9:24, assisted by senior Hannah Herzig, got things rolling, and Bremer followed with a fast-break layup at 7:15, widening the gap.

MSU's pressure forced 13 turnovers in the first quarter, turning those into points. Rhyan Holmgren added a layup at 6:55, assisted by Mallory Czinano, keeping the momentum going. Despite a brief Mustang rally, the Mavericks' clutch free-throw shooting maintained their edge, ending the quarter up 22-14.

The second quarter saw MSU continue to exploit the Mustangs' turnovers. Holmgren hit early free throws to widen the lead, and the Mavericks' defense kept the heat on, converting turnovers into points, like Hannah Leverson's fast-break layup. Despite SMSU's three-point shooting closing the gap, late free throws by Schweim helped the Mavericks hold a 38-34 lead at halftime.

In the third, Minnesota State's defense was again a force, pushing 11 Mustang turnovers. Bremer's layup and subsequent free throw pushed the Mavericks ahead early. Adeline Kent and Herzig's assists were pivotal in extending the lead.

The teams traded leads throughout the quarter, but MSU capitalized on turnovers to score fast-break points. Schweim's three-pointer and timely free throws from Stokes ensured the Mavericks stayed ahead. As the quarter wound down, Bremer's jumper and free throws secured a 60-54 lead heading into the final quarter.

Minnesota State kicked off the fourth with defensive intensity, forcing turnovers and converting quickly. Schweim's steal and layup set the tone, and Kent's layup, assisted by Herzig, extended the lead to 64-54.

As the game progressed, the Mavericks continued to utilize the Mustangs' turnovers, with Leverson's three-pointer and Stokes' steady free-throw shooting widening the gap. MSU achieved a season-high with 32 free throws.

Despite a late Mustang surge, narrowing the score to a single possession, MSU sealed the win with key free throws and defensive stops. Bremer's final free throw with 0:02 left capped the victory at 79-71. This win clinched the NSIC South Division Championship and a share of the NSIC Regular Season Championship with Minnesota Duluth.

Minnesota State heads to the Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Thursday, Feb. 12, for a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Augustana as the visiting team. Fans can watch live on the NSIC Network.
