DULUTH, Minn. — No. 14 Minnesota State (15-18-2, 9-17-2 WCHA) dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 9 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs at AMSOIL Arena.
The Mavericks generated 23 shots but were unable to solve the Bulldogs' goaltender. Junior goaltender
Hailey Hansen kept Minnesota State in the game, stopping 43 of 45 shots in a strong effort between the pipes.
The first period remained scoreless, with Hansen turning away multiple early chances. Minnesota Duluth broke through at the 12:49 mark of the second period to take a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks had a power-play opportunity later in the frame but could not capitalize.
In the third, Minnesota State continued to push offensively, earning another power play and winning key faceoffs, but the Bulldogs added an insurance goal midway through the period to extend the lead to 2-0. The Mavericks' penalty kill held firm late, but the deficit stood.
"I am proud of the effort today." said head coach
Shari Dickerman. "We executed our game plan and generated chances. Hailey was great in net and gave us a chance to win. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a way to score. We will recover and refocus and try to extend our season tomorrow afternoon."
Minnesota State will face the Bulldogs again for game two tomorrow at AMISOL Arena for a 1 p.m. puck drop.
